I have thought that the Utes are similar to the teams Ohio State has struggled with this season.

This writer who breaks down the Ohio State matchups views us as a “nightmare”

A Match-up Nightmare for the Silver Bullets

I think their offense may also be a nightmare match up for us. We have tons of injuries in the secondary going against some of the top receivers in the nation. With time to scheme I’m sure Whitt and Scalley will put together a great plan.

It should make for a great game.

No mention of the defense at all.  Just offense. Fun stuff.

The defensive game plan is simple and we already saw it this season against USC. Executing it will be the issue

D-Line will need to get constant pressure while not letting Stroud move the pocket and reset himself. Scalley will send LB’s, Bishop and occasionally a Corner as part of the 4 man rush while dropping a D-Lineman into coverage but it is imperative that Utah devote as many resources to pass coverage as possible.

LB’s will need to read/react like they did against Oregon instead of crashing the hole at the snap. Holding that freshman RB to 1-3 yards consistently will be much more important than trying to get a TFL on every play. He gets his yards when the D gets overaggressive and will break a couple if you only give him one guy to beat.

Ultimately, you try to limit the damage Ohio State can do as opposed to trying to shut them down completely. Don’t let them beat you deep, no YAC, swarm to the ball and force them to move methodically down the field on every possession. Big play offenses are by nature, inefficient, so force them to be good at something they aren’t.

Oh, and how about finally getting a TO? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Utah defense with so few TO’s for a season.

Get a TO…huh? Like Devin Lloyd’s pick 6? Or what about the interception we got right before the half that resulted in a FG? That’s 2 TOs and 10 points by our defense in the last game.

Yes, that was a good TO game. Now do the rest of the season.

The Utah D only created 1.1 TO’s per game in 2021 which is the lowest since they joined the Pac-12.

          2020 – 2.6 TO’s / game
          2019 – 1.6
          2018 – 1.5
          2017 – 2.1
          2016 – 2.3
          2015 – 2.6
          2014 – 1.6
          2013 – 1.3
          2012 – 1.8
          2011 – 2.5

Ok that’s fair. Didn’t realize you were going by our team avg for the year. Given that 1) this is our youngest defense of all-time, and 2) I believe they’ve especially been playing lights out as of late…it seemed a little harsh to call the defense out for lack of TOs. But I get where you’re coming from now.

It has been such an odd season, at least compared to what you would expect out of a Utah team. You can usually write the same post every year and be right: 1) Utah will have an opportunistic Defense that will generate sacks, turnovers and other assorted havoc plays, 2) Utah’s special teams will flip the field on both sides and when the O sputters, will be there to pick up the slack with points, and 3) The offense will show glimpses of potential but over the long run will cost the team at least 4 games a year unless the D and Special Teams are so dominant that they don’t need the O to score a point that game.

For the Rose Bowl, I’m not sure that sacking Stroud will be the difference. But if they can frustrate him and get a couple of picks/fumbles, OSU might just mail the rest of the game in.
