For decades, in both college football and basketball, certain teams have the best players that money can buy. All of the “marquee” teams have been doing this with very good stealth, or with little interest by the NCAA to investigate them. However, the NCAA goes after the “non-marquee” programs that try the same methods to compete. With the NIL, now all of these tricks being used to pay the top players is out in the open, and legal. There is more competition now that is out in the open. Until there are strictly enforced rules for player compensation, the wealthy programs (aka “marquee” programs) will continue to get the best players money can buy. It’s why the SEC and Big Ten are greedy in football dollars, at the expense of the other conferences. The Utes can compete, but are at a disadvantage financially. If there aren’t strict rules and enforcement for player compensation soon, then college football, as we know it, at the FBS level will continue to devolve into the haves and have nots—with the haves winning all of the “championships”.
