ParticipantIn case you missed it. Some anonymous troll on, I think, Ute Zone posted a big write up claiming that Utah is a lock for the Big-10 in the next year or two. The write up was actually kind of compelling, despite me knowing full well that it was and is BS.
So it gets posted, then some dude posts it on CougarBoard and they got their panties all in a wad over it. Then the “Locked On…” network of podcasts on YouTube picked up on the story, including a Big-10 one. Drake Toll, who is the biggest shill in podcasting, slobbed all over it, etc. Then some other random CFB sites wrote articles about it and posting on X about it. Saying stuff like “Anonymous Source high up at the Univeristy of Utah claims…”. Next thing I know someone posts on Reddit about there being a lot of smoke about Utah going to the Big-10.
Good heavens, when people need off-season content, they’ll latch onto about anything.
We ought to start a claim that the “SEC is deep in discussions with BYU and an invite is imminent in an effort to expand it’s geographic footprint and keep up with the Big-10”.

ParticipantAnd I’ll note, A) I’d love it if we ended up in the Big-10. I’d love to play USC and Oregon regularly again, B) You never know it could happen in 2030 or 2031 when the next round of media negotiations take place. I’m not saying it will, but crazier things have happened. But it’s definitely not happening now and certainly not before we know what happens with the ACC.

Participant“Some anonymous troll”
No doubt. I’ll admit, it had me fooled for about 5 minutes – but then the “next month” claim was just so outlandishly ridiculous that it was obviously a troll.
Somebody was either super bored and wanted to get some attention, or was seriously trying to do damage to the Utah fanbase.

ParticipantIt’s funny. I want Big 10 for Utah for a number of reasons that we all share: Money, prestige, access and attractiveness to the best recruits, academic connections for the U, etc.
But what I really want is to be reconnected to the Western Four in the B1G. Somewhere I saw a rendering of a suggested B1G western pod that would include those four plus Utah and Stanford. I want this more than anything and know of its unlikelyhood in the immediate future, and quite possibly ever.
The Big 12 has always been the “Marriage of Convenience” conference. And I am feeling that in spades since we joined. They think they’re united, yet that are some of the most insecure and small d— energy schools I’ve seen from the old P5 ranks. The difference between the old PAC schools and the rest of the Big 12 is so obvious to me.
The PAC teams know who they are and know they belong. The rest of that conference (the old B12 leftovers and the mid-major additions) are constantly threatened. It’s amazing how much Utah makes them squirm just because we’re proud of who we are and know what we’re capable of in spite of a rough stretch of mbb and fb. We know we’re rebounding in both and they HATE that we know it. They hate that we think we can eventually make the B1G and want that for our institution. No, we’re not just “happy to be here.” If there’s something bigger than what we have, we’re going to shoot for it.
Anyway, the rumor was obviously too good to be true. In the meantime, Utah needs to get its crap back together in the two money sports.

ParticipantI will admit, that while I’m not thrilled about the Big-12, particularly being in a conference with schools in the Central and Eastern time zone (though I love having TCU back), I’m glad we are still in conference with Colorado, ASU, UA, and even BYU. I love regional rivalry and Utah is more connected with California than it is Texas culturally and family ties, etc. The Pac-12 was perfect for us.
And 100% Amen on your last sentence.

AlohaUte
ParticipantI’ll add, good point about the “they think they are united”. The reality is, that zoob fans seem to not accept, is that ever single school in the conference would jump for the B1G or the SEC at a moments notice if an invite came. Even if it meant no conference revenue for the first 5 years or whatever. There’s a strange delusion out there that somehow the Big-12 is more altruistic than other conferences.

ParticipantGoing to the Big 10, as currently constituted, would be a good thing, generally speaking, for the U. However, would it specifically be good for Utah athletics? I’m not so sure. I want to think so, but then I see who’s in the Big 10 and the number of quality institutions who’ve been eternal also-rans in that conference.
See, as major college sports get professionalized, but without guardrails like a draft, contracts, and full profit sharing, I see an environment where, yes, all universities in the Big 10 will get paid. But, just like the Washington Generals versus the Harlem Globetrotters, many of those universities will be doomed to an eternity of mediocrity and constant losing. Anyone here think that Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, etc…are going to make the CFP anytime soon? Neither do I. But, at least they’re getting paid, there’s that.

ParticipantGood points, I’ve thought about this a lot too. The reality is Washington and UCLA are pretty much destined to be what Michigan State and Iowa are at best in the Big-10. Oregon has the $$$ behind them and USC the reputation and history to compete every year with Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. If we went to the Big-10, we’d have to learn to be ok with being, essentially, Everton in the Premier League. A team that is always at the top level of the sport in terms of league, but always finishing in the middle or near the bottom.
-
FountainofUte
ParticipantYeah, hard to argue that point. I don’t want Utah to become cannon fodder instead of a real competitor. Still, how many critics of Utah (so many of them 40 miles south of us) said we’d be nothing more than Washington State or the AZ schools in the PAC-12.
I know we’ll never be USC or Ohio State, but I DO think so much of what has held Utah back in the past is being relegated, whether in the WAC or even in the Big 12 in a P2 world. When we’re put on the same plane as the biggest brands, Utah rises above expectation. We make the most out of what we get from opportunity and money.

ParticipantSaid a few times, going from MWC to PAC was a massive upgrade. From PAC to Big12 was a drop off in football, but arguably a small upgrade in hoops.
Biggest issue I have is teams are so spread out and the championship venues are now much longer a 6 hours drive down I-15 to Sin City. Of course potentially going to Big10 just puts us with many teams even further away.
-
TomahawkCruise
ParticipantBig upgrade in basketball.
The Pac was dogs**t in hoops most years.

AZUTE
ParticipantThis was clearly a byu troll posing as an Utah fan for the sole purpose of making Utah look bad.
He created a utezone account the day before he posted and this was his first post. It was immediately shutdown by the utezone mods but not before it grew legs and ended up on message board genius and cougarboard and locked on big12 podcast as truth.
Yeah whatever. If Zoobs are that desperate I feel sorry for them.

ParticipantForm the super conference and get it over with. Separate football from all other college sports. Form conferences with regional ties for the other team sports. College football is like a heroin addiction. You cant live without it. NIL, transfer portal, realignment, uneven playing field and rising ticket prices are becoming viable rehabs. It won’t stop until people quit buying tickets and watching it on tv.
Spreading rumors and talking s!it just makes us look bad. We would get our butts kicked in the SEC or Big10. We don’t have the $$ to compete at the highest level. Sorry for the rant. I’m feeling sad, guilty and a little depressed for not renewing my football tickets. Life goes on and I’ve had enough.
-
AlohaUte
ParticipantKeep your chin up buddy. Don’t feel guilty about not renewing, though I understand feeling a little sad about it. It’s been a rough couple of years as a Ute fan, but I think we’ll be more often competing for conference championships than not.
-
Jim Vanderhoof
ParticipantThanks Aloha. I’ve had season tickets since the early 70’s. I retired a couple years ago and have a fixed income. I can’t justify the cost anymore. It’s been a great ride and no regrets. If I had the money I would renew. My 4 tickets have gone from $400 per season to $6000. I’ve been able take my daughter for 20 years and grandson for the past 10. I have loved it all win or lose. I hope who ever gets my tickets find the enjoyment and memories I’ve had. As one tradition dies a new one begins. I’ll be a Ute for life and it’s going to be really hard that first home game to not be there in person. I guess I’ll go from a stadium chair QB to an armchair QB at home.

ParticipantI recall Greg Fluguar commenting about the potential down the road and his BYU clown audience gnashing their teeth about him even saying it. The current state of college athletics has me less interested by the day.

ParticipantIt was clearly written by some zoobie troll. Every Ute fan remembers that it took the Pac-10 6 months to properly vet (1) expansion, (2) Utah, (3) all other expansion candidates, and (4) the distributing media networks. Utah fans were also able to follow along with all the extensive media reports from reputable media sources (i.e. ESPN, CBSSN, The Salt Lake Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, et al).
And now some anonymous “1st time” poster with a brand new UteZone account suddenly pops up with inside information that this would all be secured in a month??? And sans reputable media outlets discussing this? It’s no coincidence that the first place outside of UteZone that this was mentioned was on cougarboard. That zoob who’d posted about it there is likely the “Ute insider” who’d posted that fairy tale on UteZone in the first place.
And if Jake Toll wanted to do a podcast about this fake news BigTen expansion story on “Locked On Big 12”, why wasn’t JT Wistrcill (“Locked On Utes”) invited to join the discussion to provide his narrative?
Answer: Because Jake T[r]oll knows it was bulls**t, and was taking this as an opportunity to take another shot at Utah, because he’s still p**sed off that Utah was so dismissive of his conference during the period where we were trying our best to hold the Pac-12 together. If JT were allowed to comment, he’d have shot that down. Jake can’t fan the flames when there’s no legitimate smoke, and while JT is holding a wet blanket.
If the day ever comes that the BigTen extends Utah an invitation, it won’t be a month after nobody was talking about it. That whole “month” time frame was designed to provide zoob nation a short wait to spend the offseason jeering at Utah for being “arrogant” and “delusional”, continue riling up other Big 12 fan bases, and deflect from their blatant moneyball tampering agenda, that had recently cropped up among Baylor fans.

ParticipantSpot on.
Jake Troll does it because he doesn’t like Utah for the reasons you mentioned, but also, and perhaps more so, because these types of Utah troll podcasts attract tons and tons of views and comments by CougarBoard members and other BYU fans.
I mean, there must be hundreds of Utah-hate comments in each video. Comments that aren’t just rivalry smack, but comments like we are some lesser human being species or whatever, and worse.
And, he does MANY pro-BYU videos where the headline and the content are something like:
“Next up Locked on Big 12: Why BYU’s HUGE national brand will make BYU one of the BIGGEST brands in the nation”.
BYU fans eat that up like nothing else. He’s playing them so hard.
-
PhiladelphiaUte
ParticipantIn this link, you’ll find Jake Toll openly admitting that he only posted that fake news story to get clicks.
-
Jim Vanderhoof
ParticipantGood point BD. All “Locked on Big12” cares about is ratings like any other media outlet. Cougar fans are a hot ticket for ratings. Utah hate + BYU love = more viewers. It’s just a matter of time when the roles will change. The wolf in sheep’s clothing. They’ve been the most despised fan base in every conference they’ve been in. Free ice cream and trolling other sites to make us look bad and them good will end soon. Baylor now knows along with Iowa State who seemed to know from the start. Arizona St UFC and CU are on board as well. History always repeats itself.
-
PhiladelphiaUte
ParticipantAnd right after admitting that he’s only whoring for clicks, he’s right back to promoting biased “hate” for the U.
VILLAIN: Is Utah the Big 12’s MOST HATED School, or Does BYU Just Paint Utes as Expansion Bad Guy?
I don’t know where he’s getting his poll statistics, but if this is for real, it’s most likely a push poll from his own site, and immediately following another one of his “hate Utah” podcasts. On the above podcast, he’s right back to portraying the author of that UteZone comment — that our invitation to the BigTen was a done deal, and will be announced next month — as an actual Ute fan, despite the fact that there is no real evidence that he was.
Big 12 fans are apparently extremely gullible.

ParticipantMy interactions with visiting fans from our new conference foes including Baylor, TCU, Iowa State, Texas Tech, and others have been nothing but pleasant. Visiting fans who visit the Hunty and Rice-Eccles will realize the horror stories they have heard from Zoobs are not accurate at all.
-
SLC-UteFan
ParticipantI sit in a section of the stadium that gets lots of visiting fans. It’s the cheap seats way up high in one of the corners of the stadium.
My interactions and observations of visiting fans in the conference has been really good except one fanbase – and we know who that fanbase is.
