It seems to me you need three things to be a truly successful college basketball team:

      1.  First you need a point guard that can manage the game on the court.  The so-called, elusive, true point guart.

      2.  You need a rim protector.  Someone who can force the driving players away from the basket.  It may be a collective, but you need to be able to challenge those players that score close in.

      3.  Consistent three point shooting.  As today’s game changes like the pro game you need someone who can score from the outside and break the momentum of teams on a run.

I’m not sure who is filling those roles on this Utah team.  So who does ie next year?

      4. Coaching

      5. Defense (goes along with protecting the rim)

By coaching do you mean game management (Majerus was a savant at that). The other aspects of coaching these days, recruiting, training and strategy is somewhat bound up in the other three requirements. And to a certain extent they mitigate any lack in the game management area.

Yeah pretty broad. Things like “knowing how to inbound the ball,” knowing you need to shoot a 3-pointer when down by three with 2 seconds left, and game management come to mind.

Ball didn’t go in the hoop.

IMO, we are 0 for 3 so far.

      1. You need a floor general, but it doesn’t have to be a PG. It can be anyone who just takes over the game. This is what the Utes were missing most this year. Bonam did it on Senior Night but not the rest of the season. Offense was too slow to develop compared to the rest of our league. Barefield needs to make a big leap if he expects to fill this role next year. Down the line I think Daniels is a good enough scorer and passer that he can lead the team like this and while he screwed up a bit this year at least we know he is passionate.

      2. Not only do they need to change shots they also need to get rebounds. Jayce Johnson needs to develop defensively. This season he made big strides on the offensive end. His shots at the beginning of the season were mostly bricks and at the end he had moves and touch. If he can become a defensive stopper this off-season the sky is the limit for that kid. I have no faith that Collette can ever be a shot blocker. Jokl currently looks like a foul machine like Collette and if he ever expects to get minutes then solid defense without fouling is exactly what he needs to work on.

      3. I disagree with this. Unnecessary 3-point attempts were a huge problem for the Utes this season and IMHO failing to defend the 3 only cost the Utes one game that I remember. Our PFs spent too much time on the perimeter offensively instead of posting up and demanding double teams to create passing opportunities in the paint. The Utes shooting percentage was very high, and it could have been higher if Kuzma hadn’t been putting up bad shots from outside at the worst possible times. Bealer is the best spot up shooter on the team and if a 3-pt shot is open he should ideally be the person taking it, Daniels can shoot the 3 too. Van Dyke didn’t look good this year he may not be D1 material.
