If Utah’s offense could get even CLOSE to that level of production this season, our Utes REALLY COULD be a threat to win the Pac-12. With the level of receivers we’re projected to have coupled with arguably the most talented quarterback prospect since Alex Smith in Tyler Huntley, not to mention an actually competent OC in Troy Taylor, I think we might just be in for something special. I really do think we can go 10-2 or better this season. Also, I didn’t realize that Utah has been averaging 9 wins per season since 2003, but they have. I think Utah is going to beat North Dakota on Thursday like 45-7 or something like that, and then go into Provo and beat the Zoobies, who hopefully will be coming off upset of LSU essentially on the road. That would become a HUGE victory for our Utes because it would be a win over a Top 25 team on the road (BYU would obviously be in the Top 25 with basically a road victory over a top-level SEC team). A win like that would propel Utah into the Top 20, and would likely be the catalyst for a special season.

You’ve had a little too much koolaid already for a 6AM post.
      BYU is not beating LSU.

Unpopular opinion, I don’t think Utah will ever get that level of production on offense again. Maybe close, but that was the perfect storm of Legendary Coaching (Urban Meyer), Rare talent (Alex Smith), Innovative Offense (spread), and a relatively easy schedule (MWC).

We may never see an offensive coach the likes of Urban Meyer at Utah again. We haven’t had a QB talent like Alex since (we may have one in Huntley or Tuttle) and the spread offense is no longer revolutionary. Most teams run a form of it and almost every team in the country is built to defend it. Small tweaks here and there keep it fresh. All that and we now play in a much more difficult conference. I’m not saying it can’t happen and I hope it does, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

2004 was a magical season for Utah.

I agree with you – I just like the optimism of preseason!
