We don’t even get “hard tough close rivalry road game win” credit

No OOC game gets us where we want.  The only thing that really matters is winning the South.  Once that’s done, anything can happen at that point.

This is correct. That’s why the way I judge the OOC schedule is how well it prepares us for conference play. It’s a delicate balance; I wouldn’t want us playing Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio St. as our 3 OOC games in the same year – we would enter conference play beaten, demoralized, and probably injured.

But at the same time, does anyone honestly think an FCS team, an “abominable” independent mid-major, and the WAC doormat are adequately preparing us for conference play? I say no. Utah will experience a significant jump in strength of opponent on Friday that I’m not sure we’re prepared for. Not saying we’ll lose (I predicted a close win), but it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes us a quarter or two to adjust to a higher caliber of play.

Ideally I’d like to see us play at least a couple of lower level P5 teams each year, and perhaps only one team at the level we played this year (but absolutely not BYU-P).

I read through a few of his comments about Utah playing an “abominable” BYU team. Is this an outlier vote or is this the norm? That’s the question. The fact that we’re ranked #23 AP tells me this might not just be an outlier vote.

I have to believe that if we would have not had the miscues and penalties inside the red zone against BYU, and scored touchdowns rather than field goals, thus routing BYU, our SOS would not look so bleak. Having said that, this victory over such a bad BYU team will only hurt us if we lose. If we continue to win against our PAC-12 opponents, our team can only look better in the eyes of the voters.

Guys. Polls at this stage are useful for the purpose of being in the conversation. That’s all. Wilner is fair. Does anybody here think that our team has passed the eyeball test to this point? I don’t. I like what I’m seeing, but there are far more polished teams out there right now. I expect the end of the season will filter out a lot of pretenders, at which point, I expect our team to be a contender…unless or until they’re not.
