So does Utah I like our chances in every game this season.

Except maybe Washington they are scary good looking.

Gotta be able to capitalize on those turnovers, though. Something Cal hasn’t been able to do against SC.

Yes this game could easily end 48-10 USC losing the turnover margin. That Ross Bowers for Cal is tiny low release. Love Cals running backs.

As much as I’d like this to be a game, I have little doubt SC wins it.

Well Bowers looking good now. Man great throws with players in his face. Glad Utah isn’t playing Cal.

Oregon State and Cal misses.  It’s 6s.  Just beat the pirate/Wazzu. That rain, wind game I sat through at literally the top of RES with the obnoxious Wazzu fan screaming ‘Cougar town baby, Cougar town’ every single play for the last 30 minutes. Remember that game a little too well. Cal fans have been good in my book.

So far, really like what Justin Wilcox has done with Cal. Tough. Disciplined. His tenure is still young, but I’m impressed by it nonetheless.

I don’t understand why this Utah team is so undisciplined. Must be the team leaders or something.

Who knows. Too many variables to speculate. That said, I go back to what Whit says…it’s always on the coaches; you either can’t coach or can’t recruit. I do think we need a better balance of athleticism, emotion, and intelligence.

At least we are 4-0, which means there’s a chance to go 5-0 in two weeks. Of course, Vanderbilt was 3-0, with a win against K state — until today when it played Alabama.

Well, my adopted home-team of TCU is beating OSU — can’t stand OSU.

Thing is, I think this team has all the right varibles.  Dicpline seems to be the issue.

Also find it interesting how Ute fans view TCU.  They humilated us for the history books in our marque match up, but I too have no problems rooting them.  Boise State as another rival in history, not even close.

You are saying I need a better balance? Not sure if you are directing it to me. To each’s own. If not, cool.

I’ll stay on topic. First, I’m a fan, not a fanatic. I want Utah to win everything, but I don’t wear crimson-colored glasses. I was a fan of sports before I became a fan/alum of Utah — notwithstanding the fact that I played and coached at Utah.

I call it as I see it. Utah has a lot of good athletes (what good D1 programs don’t?), but good athleticism alone is woefully deficient. Coach has to coach, and players have to learn and execute. I’m of the opinion that many of our penalties are a result of being overly emotional and careless. Mistakes happen, so that’s not a big deal and those are young men playing under duress; however, when it happens frequently, then there are issues. I don’t pretend to know the cause(s), thus I have no answers; even if I did, I’m just a fan and don’t care that much about a game played by people I don’t know.

Discipline is the outcome/result of something. For some, it’s innate. For others, it’s a learning curve. I’m sure our coaches are doing something about the penalties; for whatever reason, unfortunately, the manifested result on the field still leaves much to be desired. If we player “smarter” ball (with controlled emotion & more game intelligence), I think our overall athleticism will shine even more.

Of course, as always, my 2 cents.

Oh…I adopted TCU because I lived by its campus for almost a dozen years and have a lot of friends who went there. That said, Utah is my true home team. Would like to see TCU do well.

Nice analysis. I also share the opinion that emotion is a playing a role. Whatever the reason(s), we need to clean them up.

And a great win for TCU! Incindentally, they had only 1 penalty in the entire game.

Rooting for TCU, too. But they’re pulling a Utah currently.

No, no, was not calling you out at all. I agree with your post. Was meaning to call attention to Whitt’s quote that you brought up. It’s very apt to all sports. When I read through your post, discipline seemed to be another factor that he didn’t address. Athleticism will win out only to the degree of competition. I think that’s why the PAC suffers so much in national opinion. We don’t let teams go undefeated in our league and we tend to choke on the national state. Parity goes deeper on the reg than other confrences. You put the PAC12 and say the ACC up against each other for a full season – I’d bet the PAC holds winning records against them when it’s not a one-off situation. Athleticism, emotion, and intelligence is something the PAC does well. Discipline and officiating on the other hand is something the league could work on. Certainly Utah.

And TCU, those damned horned frogs, from my experience the respect goes both ways. And I like that.
