The one thing I’m not comfortable with today is our WR depth.  Jaylen Dixon’s performance aside in the scrimmage, I don’t expect him to be in the top 6 this Fall.  He had a nice day but isn’t ready IMO.  Alec Dana is not in the program today.  Jameson Field would be ahead of Dixon and Tyquez Hampton suffered an injury a few weeks back with surgery likely.  Not sure where that places him in the Fall.  Singleton is gone (still not sure where he’s going).  That leaves the following:

Top 6 not in any order…1. Bryan Thompson – Tore a pectoral muscle lifting in the winter, 2. Samson Nacua, 3. Bronson Boyd, 4. Siaosi Mariner, 5. Demari Simpkins, 6. Britain Covey

The rest – Jameson Field, Jaylen Dixon, Tyquez Hampton (injured), Solomon Enis – Freshman, Terrell Perriman – Freshman, Batchelor Johnson – Walk on.  We need 6-8 so hopefully Hampton responds well and Enis figures it out quickly.  Injuries put some pressure on us here I think.

Not comfortable with LB’s yet either but if Pirtle is good and/or Bernard arrives that becomes much better immediately.  Safties an outside concern if Blair can’t compete at the same level but plenty of experience there with Ballard, Afia, Burgess and Davis.  Lewis playing Nickel with Guidry today.

Yeah. WR is a little rough. Talented but young.

Mariner, Simpkins, Nacua and Covey. I like those four.

After that? Who knows. Good thing we have Moss and Shyne and DHC and Green. Hopefully Troy Taylor has a little ARod in him and will be ok calling on Moss and Shyne 20 tines each a couple of games.

Simpkins and Covey handle the slot for sure and will do it well.  Nacua works both inside and outside so he will rotate where needed.  Dixon/Perriman behind those three.

Thompson and Boyd are the two projected outside starters in August with Siaosi, Nacua and then Hampton (if healthy) and Enis in the mix.

Not sure Mariner (Wilson) is a true 1…he’s a Senior so maybe he steps up and takes that spot from Boyd…we’ll see but in the Fall I’d be surprised if he wasn’t the 3rd outside guy.

That said we’re 6 deep with Enis and Hampton as question marks at 7 and 8 today.

Shyne still a little gun shy but I expect him to get a lot more comfortable in 5 months and get back to what we saw last camp.  Moss is a beast…has just gotten better.  DHC behind them and Green a distant 4th as a redshirt freshman.  Still a way to go but should be good in a year or two.

You’re right though…run game helps and add Huntley as another run option as we’re good there.

Did Siaosi lose a year of eligibility by switching names? He’s a junior and is going to have a huge year.  You are way too low on him.

Nope you’re correct only a Junior…need to stop drinking in the AM.  Talent level has increased in that room the past two seasons with 4 star guys added.  He’s not that type of talent.  Steady performer for sure not overly dynamic.  That rating isn’t mine by the way.

Screw you and your reasonable doubts. This WR core will break every record…EVER!

depth is concerning because of injuries… but we have more talent back there than we have ever had. It is just a matter of them picking up the new system.

We have speed, quickness, and size… what we don’t have is a wealth of experience.

Call an ambulance, because you’re about to get REkT, as my kids would say! Just kidding…but I do think the offensive scheme takes a step forward that will really help the receivers improve.  Jaylen Dixon touts a 4.35 40. That speed will translate to game day to stretching the defense, even if he’s not in the starting group, it will likely get utilized / targeted once or twice a game. Then, you have some guys with good experience that are finally upper classman in Mariner and Simpkins. Look for both to continue their upward trend. Covey was a freshman ALL AMERICAN – Go ahead and discount him again, just like everyone did before. He runs low to the ground, can cut on a dime, that will stick. Speed may take a minute to catch up. I think Covey stays injury free if he can make it past the first 2-3 months of getting back. Tackling him is like tackling a feather, there’s not enough mass on his end to make the impact felt. Nacua was too skinny last year but that shouldn’t be an issue this year and he’s a big target at 6’3″. I think Boyd will be solid, Enis should play, that’s 6 guys that are all 3 star recruits or better, sans Covey.

Haha…good point.  Scheme will take a strong step forward.  I expect continued great things from Covey…he is in the top 6 for sure along with Simpkins and Nacua as possession guys that can make big plays as you mention.  I’ve never discounted him before and won’t start today. He’s a natural leader with intelligence to go along with quickness and a HIGH football IQ.  He’s a “dude” that will continue to produce at high levels.  Problem with Dixon is that he’s 4th in the slot today and if Perriman is better he’s 5th not many chances for him to see time next year as it stands.

Ranking them looking ahead to August (with some inside info)

        1. Thompson 2. Simpkins 3. Boyd 4. Covey 5. Mariner 6. Nacua 7. Enis 8. Hampton 9. Field 10. Dixon 11. Perriman.

Enis and Mariner along with Thompson’s health are the X factors and could move around some in the Fall.  Siaosi acts like a Senior and he can climb that list.  Thompson is real and before the injury coming into this Spring was considered by the staff to be the guy to take over for Carrington along with Boyd.  Much bigger upside than Mariner frankly who is good not great.

No setbacks so far.  He’s a key with Chase at LB.  He’s running and working out but nothing serious yet.

Don’t forget about the WR’s we are picking up this fall. I’m stoked to see Solomon Enis & Terreli Perriman get on the field and contribute.
