Week three is going to be fun.

Let’s just start with this: with nine starters returning, a veteran offensive line, and a dabbling of potential playmakers in the passing game, it is not a stretch to say that the 2018 Utah offense projects as its best since the Utes entered the PAC.

Of course, that isn’t saying a lot.

Man I hate July its my birth month and all I want is Football back.

Specifically, a severely inconsistent pass rush (only six sacks in their six losses versus 19 in their seven wins) and penchant for fading in the fourth quarter (Utah gave up 104 fourth quarter points all year compared to 193 in quarters 1 through 3 combined) appeared as severe problems that were, frankly, covered up by 26 forced turnovers and a great kicking game.</span>

I disagree with the defense part. Utah was young last year and forced a lot of turnovers. That is a good thing. Sacks are frankly an overrated stat. I would much rather have a turnover vs a sack. Also his breakout player is the wrong name and injured so kind of ended on a poorly written note.

How are sacks an overrated stat? Look at Utah’s record when getting 3+ sacks a game, Hint (it’s pretty f**king good). A sack on 3rd down is just as good as a turnover.

Just as good?   No not really especially depending on the circumstances. A turnover in FG range saves three points. A turnover in a four down situation means potentialy saving 6-8 points. A turnover is the best stat next to points because typically you win. The only more important stat that leads to probability of winning is kickoff and punt return touchdowns.

Sacks cause havoc plays that lead to turnovers, without that pressure qb’s will sit back and pick apart your defense… Like I said look up Utah’s record when having 3+ sacks a game…

Yeah you got me there a sack turnover is better than a regular turnover…..But it is still better than a regular ole sack.

Pressure cause havoc plays that lead to turnovers. Sacks are also caused by pressure. Pressure is needed, not necessarily sacks.

Something I wish the NCAA tracked. I also love a TFL more than a sack to. They are the real dominance of your Dline. We just tried to run on you and got a three yard loss from your RB.

Start at 1:20 if the video doesn’t already.

That pick won us the game.

No,it is not. Turnovers are far more impactful, and if I were to hazard a guess, create better starting field position than a sack and a punt combination.

Last 4 years Utah has averaged 28 turnovers gained/yr. Last year they had 27 turnovers gained (inline with their yearly average) and finished 7-6…

Utah averages 40 sacks/yr over that  same timeframe. Last year they had 25 sacks (well below their average) and finished 7-6…

            Vegas bowl +5 turnovers- 34-28…

Vegas bowl, Utah had 4 sacks. A whole sack better than their season average. So, guess that means sacks are really great at showing who will win.

Also, here are the factors for success in football.

              https://www.footballstudyhall.com/2014/1/24/5337968/college-football-five-factors

Note: sacks ain’t one of them. Also note, sacks don’t even correlate to one. Turnovers are worth 5 points according to advanced stats. Sacks, at most, are worth 3 (http://archive.advancedfootballanalytics.com/2008/11/value-of-sack.html (note this article uses NFL stats)).

I am sorry. Sacks aren’t important. Pressure, on the other hand, is. Pressure that prevents big plays, that kills efficiency, and causes turnovers sacks are part of pressure.

Sacks are a result of pressure, without pressure teams are not getting tfl’s, QB hits, hurries, or sacks. To isolate sacks and say they’re “overrated” or “not important” is ridiculous.

But that’s what the numbers bear out. Sacks aren’t indicative of winning. Pressure and turnovers. Those win games.
