      Probably put them there so they would shut up because they believe they have a chance. Joel Klatt shut them down pretty hard. I know he’s not on the committee, but it was pretty funny.

        I’ve been saying that for years. Utah did not deserve a spot in 04 or 08, BYU didn’t in 1984 and UCF doesn’t now.

        Maybe, but we cannot know. And the best evidence that exists (Utah destroyed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl) would point otherwise.
        
        I totally understand the SOS issue. But the problem for the teams, such as Utah in 04 and 08, is that they can only control what they control. In my opinion, if they take care of business, they should be given an opportunity. Maybe they do not deserve it objectively, but I would prefer a system where they get a shot. So I would do the 8 team playoff, with 5 P5 champs, 2 at large, and 1 at large from the G5. Even under that system, there will be arguments and bitching over a conference champ that did not “deserve it,” but I would prefer that system. Then there is at least an opportunity for it to be settled on the field, without it being mostly a beauty contest.

        Facts are facts they did let them in. 1984 tds lead to the BCS. Utah busted the BCS twice and beat up Bama which lead to the CFP.
        
        Thems the facts. They were allowed in so “deserving” bull crap is for Max Hall in 09 talk.

        Why should they be given an opportunity? Because I prefer a system where a team can prove it on the field. I understand if you (and others) prefer a system where an undefeated team from a G5 doesn’t get a chance, but I do not.
        
        To me, a system where no G5 team even has a chance that takes away a lot of the fun of sports. Under your system, every G5 team and player on those teams is given a ceiling before they even play a single game – I think that is a lame system. I think allowing 1 at-large G5 spot is a good balance of recognizing the SOS, but still allowing an opportunity for a G5 team to settle things on the field. A lot of other good P5 teams will be left out, but at least they had a chance to make via on-the-field performance (i.e., win your conference). They can also win a beauty contest for 2 at large spots. Hard to complain about a system where everyone has a chance to compete via on-the-field results versus a beauty contest that is completely subjective.

        Exactly this. The CFP should be expanded out a bit to include more teams. The NCAA Basketball Tournament is the single most exciting sports event of the year, and I am not that big of a CBB fan outside of the Utes.
        
        16-seed UMBC CRUSHING 1-seed UVA by 20 points was just magical, a story for the ages.

        BS. I don’t get all this hate for the 2008 and 2004 squads. Plenty of the guys from those teams went on to be very, very good NFL players. Utah didn’t have the depth they have now, but they weren’t winning fluke games. 2008 featured a lot of wins over very good teams. It was an anomaly how good the MWC was that year, and while several games were close, Ohio St. had a similarly soft schedule and lots of close calls the year they beat Miami for the national title.
        
        It is really, really dumb to be so upset that a team has the audacity to think they should have a shot at a title or playoff when they go undefeated for 2 years. Scheduling is largely out of UCF’s control. We need a system that doesn’t do a shady elimination before a year even begins.
        
        I still think 2004 Utah could have beaten anyone (they could have lost as well) that year. People hadn’t figured out the spread yet and we were nasty on both sides of the ball. 2008 had a resume that would stacked up very well against just about anyone in the country. That Utah D was STACKED with NFL talent.

        I disagree and the only the thing I can point at is look at the nfl talent on Utah’s roster. Steady flow of developed guys that have performed well at the next level. Been that way for awhile defensively. Utah won the games in front of them. Every conference has their dregs.

        I would have agreed with 100% before the PAC-12. Now, no way Utah goes undefeated with that team in a P5 conference.
        
        And that’s the problem with letting a G5 in. You screw over 20-25 P5 schools that would have gone undefeated with the G5 schedule.

        People seem to forget that the MWC was good in 2008. They, as a conference, smacked around the Pac-10. People will counter with ‘well the pac-10 wasn’t good that year’… which is a circular argument defined by the fact that the MWC owned them that year. BYU and TCU were also very good that year, and Utah beat both of them.

  I remember there being a state that Utah is one of only 3 or 4 teams who have been ranked in every initial CFP rankings, but now I can’t find it. Anyone happen to have seen that?

    It was from 2014-2016, we were ranked in every CFP each week. Streak broke in 2017.

      That’s not it. There’s only a handful of schools that have been in each initial CFP ranking, and we’re one of them.
      
      I could probably go back and figure it out myself, but I’m lazy. Was hoping someone might know off the top of their head.

        Utah wasn’t ever ranked in 2017. The CFP site has all of the previous rankings from every week. We weren’t on it at all in 2017. 2014-2016 we were ranked in every week.

    Not only were those teams ranked when we beat them, but Alabama, TCU, Oregon State, and byu-P all FINISHED in the Top 20 (and AFA was just outside). That is a pretty solid resume no matter how you look at it.
