I don’t follow college basketball in the slightest and every time I read something about our basketball team I’m really glad about that. It seems like cleveland browns level sustained incompetence.

Sadly I agree with you ALUF. We will finish in the bottom, if not the bottom of the BIG12 in MBB with virtually no chance to make it to the a tournament that matters for years. Can football start early?

Was looking at the rules and supposedly as long as you have sent an email, text, phone, call, letter by owl, etc., ;anything with a time stamp that says “I intend to enter the portal” before the deadline then you can file the paperwork at a later date.

There are guys out there who would be disruptive hires. I just don’t think that Harlan is the guy to get them. I think we all saw that when he hit the easy button and just went an hour up the road to hire Smith.
FountainofUte replied to the topic Burgess gone back TDS in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 days, 8 hours ago
Not for me. With Giac and Boylen it still felt like we were a firing/hiring away from getting back on track.
I don’t feel that this time.
I really felt like our stock was about to soar when LK took us to the Sweet 16. I had no idea that was going be the beginning of an 8-year-and-counting crash. Utah basketball was Utah basketballing again.…[Read more]

The WR of which you speak has an incredibly lucrative NIL deal setup. Supposedly $100,000 for year 1 and $700,000 every year after that in which he starts.

Not going to tell you how to feel but saying that this is the lowest the program has been in the last 20 years, I think, is recency bias. Personally, as a Utah fan, the lowest I’ve ever felt was during Giacolett’s and Boylen’s last years. Those teams really, really stunk.
Who knows…the way everyone is thinking that next season is going to be…[Read more]

Since the NFl is at the apex of this pyramid, whatever configuration is finally decided upon should probably look like its contractual mechanism. Again, I have no problem with players moving at will but there needs to be some protection in place for the schools that discovered them and provided the stage for them to shine.

This is the only way forward without killing college sports entirely. The current structure is absurd.
AZUTE replied to the topic Keba Keita enters the Portal in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 days, 9 hours ago
This isn’t over. Another ball punch will be when Keba follows Burgess to Provo which is a 99% certainty

Welcome to sports. The concept of loyalty to a program/team died decades ago. Burgess is the norm, not an exception (Whit is the exception, not the norm). This is the reality. And frankly, I am fine with coaches jumping around – would you or anyone else be “loyal” to an employer that is likely going to fire you in a year? It is a job, not a family.
chinngiskhaan replied to the topic Mens BB in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 days, 10 hours ago
The MBB program was already a sinking ship. Who cares if people are jumping off to board other ships that aren’t sinking? With or without Burgess, this program was going down. The only decent player Smith has recruited is the brother of a current player! He has to have siblings already on the team to convince mediocre players to come player here.

Utah hired Craig Smith away from Utah State…

Smith is dead man walking. He doesn’t have a way out of this spiral. His talent has left, is leaving. He hasn’t replaced it. It’s moot anyway, he doesn’t recruit well. Compounding this is two assistants have left him, which will defocus him a bit from recruiting. He hasn’t won the support of the fanbase. He’s heading into first year of play in a t…[Read more]

I think you’re missing the bigger problem here. It’s not just about Burgess alone and his skills as a coach and recruiter. I agree that both of those might be a little overblown.
The problem is that we literally lost him, a former Ute mbb player, to our hated rival down the street to take the same position. That’s a HORRIBLE look for our program.…[Read more]

and somewhow Smith has to convince them they have some kind of job security beyond next year. Tht will not be easy.

Perhaps also have contracts that last more than one season two so they can’t transfer every off-season. Right now when the season ends, every player essentially becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Ute Dub replied to the topic Mens BB in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 days, 12 hours ago
I agree, that’s a good hedge by Burgess. He gets to remain in Utah at least 3 more years if he chooses. I’m assuming he got a bump. If the Utah job opens up, he’ll be in the mix.
chinngiskhaan replied to the topic Mens BB in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 days, 13 hours ago
Burgess leaving is a nothingburger. We weren’t going anywhere whether he was on our staff or not. He made the right choice, good for him. This doesn’t change anything regarding his future at Utah.
