ParticipantIf it’s the same Whitt from 2023 and 2024 I’m with you. Can he allow his OC to run the offense? I have my doubts, the image of him looking indignant at Urban Meyer’s/Mike Sanford’s play calling on offense a couple times during 2004 are burned in my mind.

ParticipantNo doubt Utah has to add 1-2 more DT’s through the portal but the cupboard isn’t bare.
Vakalahi is an absolute stud and will be a major player for Utah.
Vimahi is proven and has played in some huge games for Utah.
Jonah Lea’ea is the wild card to me. Recruited as a linebacker a few years ago. Redshirted 2023, played a few snaps that year. Played in most the games last year but was playing at 265 lbs. IF he can get his weight around 290 he’s your first DT off the bench. The coaches love him and his skillset, just needs the weight. He’s trending in the right direction weight wise.
We recruited a handful of DT’s so I expect 1-2 of them to get some snaps this year as well.
It’s not a finished room, but it’ll be a fun room to monitor through spring ball.

ParticipantI think the problem hasn’t been the players not stepping up but the people in charge of letting them play. In my opinion, WR and RB are the two positions that are the most transferable from HS to college in terms of being ready to play immediately. And these were also the two positions where we continually heard that kids weren’t ready because they didn’t understand the playbook.
Again it’s just my opinion, but this is the same reason there needed to be a complete makeover of the offensive staff. Because what we saw was highly regarded recruits come in and be stuck at the bottom of the depth chart. So there had to be a disconnect between the abilities the coaches were recruiting that somehow disappeared when those same coaches got the kids on campus.
There couldn’t be a more glaring example of this than the 2023 class of RB’s. You go out and get yourself three 4*’s in one class and none of them can beat out a former walk-on? And all three have washed out and moved on in less than two years? Freshman RB’s make immediate impacts across the country but suddenly Utah has become a place where it takes 3-4 years to develop.,,

ParticipantMy angle was more had we moved on from Cam earlier with Ludwig at the OC helm, 2024 might have looked something like 2023. This would have kept Ludwig in place and wouldn’t have brought on this needed change this early. Call it 2024’s silver lining.

ParticipantLudwig wasn’t getting changed out after those RB runs, rarely do you see change during periods of success.
Wasn’t going to happen after 2023 either when many thought the coaches did a really good job of triage despite being the actual cause of the mortal wounds.
I’m afraid had we not heavily relied on Cam’s return to health and gotten adequate or even Barnes QB play in 2024, we would still have Ludwig and his staff and the issues that came with them.
Was 2024 avoidable? Yes, with progressive and accountable leadership it could have possibly been avoided. Our 2024 season would have happened to most programs in a similar situation and was unfortunately necessary for us to change the direction of our offensive system.

Participantthe problems of 2023 & 2024 were because the coaching staff wasn’t motivated? or just normally motivated but not highly motivated?

ParticipantAgree. Utah coaches probably didn’t feel he was worth the investment as a player or leader who played only half the 2024 season. Didn’t play up to expectations after a good 2023 season. Take the emotion out of it, by Utah dline standards, a very average player that can’t stay on the field. Honestly, didn’t even know he was out most of the season. Probably lost in the large list of injured players. After the 10/19 TCU game, looks like he only played in the BYU game, then disappeared again. Money saved for better players that can consistently contribute. Moving onto the next man up.

ParticipantBetter option for USU transfers would have been Tate Kjar. Not only does he have the chemistry with Wilson, he also was under-recruited. Go and watch highlights from the Bishop Gorman game from 2023. In addition, his performance at every elite camp was impressive.

ParticipantMatthews’s stats for Cal might not be better than Utah 2023, but I fail to see how he would have gotten 30 catches in the 2024 iteration of the Utah offense.

ParticipantHaha yeah, I saw his stats about 4-5 games into the season and noticed that he was on track to match his 2023 total. The fact that he actually did is absolutely hilarious though.
