A lot of people are worried about the defensive backfield, but I think they’ll be ok. With Fano, O’Toole, and Filinger coming back, the DE’s will be stellar. We already lost Damuni, but Barton and Reid are going to excel. Can’t afford the injury bug like last year, but honestly, when has that ever happened before? Of course, we’ll see some, but it won’t be that bad. In my opinion, the D will dominate, and the O will be top notch. I don’t think they go undefeated, but this should be a CFP or bust year.

I’m pretty sure this guy is a very close relative to someone on the team – Logan/Spencer Fano IIRC. And, I’m probably reading too much into this X post, but, hey, it’s fun to speculate!!

I know some of you think that the 60 in 60 is a waste of time. I think it is fun to see what the media predicts and to see what actually happens during the season. Obviously, they were way off last season due to injuries.

Which Utes do you expect to be in the top ten this summer? As for me:

    Definite top ten
    Rising
    Kuithe
    Barton
    Reid

    Possible top ten
    Singer
    Tafuna
    Spencer Fano

I think Bernard, Tao Johnson, and Parks might be close to the top ten. Also, a healthy Logan Fano would probably be high on the list. I think his injury will prevent him from being in the top 20.

    Am I missing anyone?

Hans is a former BYU player, and he is now their color guy. He played with Kalani. Obviously, he is a BYU fan. But, he has never been a Utah hater and has great respect for Whitt and Harding.

In my opinion, this kid would be a good get. We have flipped other BYU legacy kids, and I hope we can flip this kid. I know he is no Fano. I don’t expect him to start as a Freshman. However, he has great size. We can get this kid in the weight room, work on his skills, and he may end up being a two-year starter for the Utes.

IMO – Edge rush is a question mark. I think we tend to overrate edge rush, we tend to think it’s always a position of strength or at least never a weakness.

For us to take the next step, our DL and OL as well have to be able to hold their own and even get the edge on top 20 teams. We seem to be outmatched in the trenches against top competition.

Last year’s pass rush was largely keyed by Jonah. The year prior Scalley had to bring extra bodies to get pressure.

Fillinger in 3 yrs hasn’t lived up to the hype. O’Toole is still an unknown. Fano showed out last year, but is coming off a 2nd ACL.

Jonah rose to the occasion last year and we can see this happen again, we just don’t know.

Fellow Utes, we are less than 90 days until our first game. I am excited for this season.
What do you think our strengths and weaknesses will be in 2024? Below are a few of my thoughts.

    Strengths

QB – We have an experienced QB who can pass, run and knows how to read defenses.
WR – This may be our best WR group in a long time.
TE – We have 4 experienced tight ends, including a potential All-American.
Dline – We have experience and depth, especially if Fano returns.
LB – Our starting three LBs all have experience and if we stay healthy we should be great.
Kicking and punting – We should be solid here.

    Neither Strength or weakness

RB – We do have some guys with experience back, but do we have a true RB1?
CB – We have some talent at corner, but do we have enough to call this group a strength?

    Weaknesses

Oline – I really can’t say this is a weakness but a concern. We lost our two best linemen. Can the other guys step up?
Safety — No matter what, we will be starting two safeties who were not starters at safety in 2023. Johnson is supposed to be great, but he lacks experience at safety. We have three guys battling for the other safety position. All of this being said, I think Scalley will have these guys playing solid football by mid-season.
Depth at LB, CB, and possibly QB.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

That’s completely fair and I don’t blame you. I’m really in the same boat, too.

    Just sharing what I’ve heard.

I’ve heard from several sources that he’s on track to return for fall camp and the start of the season.

Sure hope so. Logan was looking as good as Jonah Elliss before he went down IMO. Really hoping to see a two-headed monster this year of Connor O’Toole on one end and Logan Fano on the other.

ACL tear (on first sack 😖) was Sep 29, 2023. Our first conference game is a biggie. At Oklahoma State on Sep 21, 2024. Especially after last season I reeeeally don’t want to go down the injury timeline rabbit hole. But it seems Logan’s wasn’t as complex of a surgery as Cam’s. Barring no setbacks I think he has a realistic shot at OSU.
