ParticipantGood article on CP3, especially towards the end where he talks about his competitive nature. I’m expecting big things from him and Broughton this year and really excited about the future of our secondary.
Couple of questions for anyone in the know. The article says that Shah had CP3 learn both the DB and nickel role last year and play both. And it explains that the nickel role is super complex and hard to pick up, unlike DB, which understandably led to a bunch of mistakes he made last year. This year he is set at 1 of the outside corner spots with Broughton on the other side. Is CP3 better suited as a DB or nickel? He’s often compared to JJ but I only remember JJ playing DB, not nickel. Is it fair to compare him to JJ or are they fairly different types of talent? Lastly, if CP3 is firmly taking the DB spot this year, who will be our nickel or possibly our 2 best options at nickel? Thanks

ParticipantI have caught a large amount of heat on here for saying that CP3 is not the next JJ. JJ is physically larger than CP3, he was naturally taller and more dense as an incoming freshman and had an ability to physically control recievers at the line of scrimmage that CP3 could not as a freshman. Think of it this way. CP3 is more Deion Sanders than Richard Sherman, both were elite corners but played the game differently based on body type and skill set.
As to nickle vs. corner. Nickle is very complex in Utah’s scheme because it is not static, it is a hybrid of corner, safety, and linebacker. Corner is much less complex in a “man free” defense. When JJ came in Justin Thomas, who is one of the most tragically underrated Utah defensive backs in the modern era, was firmly established as the starter. CP3 will have more value at corner because he is elite in man coverage. As it relates to the nickle I trust that Scalley has someone with elite speed and a level of physicallity that exceeds their size to play the nickle. Malone Mataele is the most experienced, but one of these talented underclassmen may also be the guy.
