ParticipantI’ve gone through 3 different “Free” e-filing tax services (TaxSlayer, e-file.com, and TurboTax). THEY’RE NOT FREE! They only CLAIM they’re free, but after you’re done loading all your information, they require a fee. I’ve worked in Finance and Tax for over 20-yrs. I can do my own taxes. I just need a platform to send it to the IRS, or else I’ll have to send it in via snail mail, and the last time I did that (2020), I didn’t get my return until October 1st.
If anybody knows of a REAL “Free” e-filing site, please advise. Otherwise, don’t be fooled by those aforementioned 3 “free” e-filing websites.

ParticipantTax hawk is free for federal (and a utah company), I switched to them from TurboTax a few years ago. It also handles a lot of complicated situations well (backdoor roth, in plan conversion income, etc). There is a fee to file state, but I don’t know of any way to file state for free except snail mail

ParticipantI recall Tax Hawk and FreeTaxUSA (same company) allow you to file free fed return for anyone and free state returns but only if your income is below a certain threshold. I think it’s around 50-70k. Although my memory is going way back. I use freetaxusa and pay $15 to efile my state return.

ParticipantI’ll mirror the prior comments…freetaxusa
Funny enough it’s my uncles company, free federal and a small fee with state

ParticipantTax Hawk. Free federal and something like $13 for state. Someone above mentioned an income limitation, but it must be fairly high because I’ve been filing incomes well into 6 figures for years now and haven’t been charged for federal.
Owned by a BYU grad (ugh), but I use it anyway because it’s a pretty great tax software and it’s the cheapest I’ve found.

ParticipantI can confirm he still cheers for BYU but has been to some Utah games in Utah red cheering on the family. So a small win right? 😆

ParticipantThat does make me feel a little bit better using his company.

ParticipantThank you to all who’d recommended TaxHawk! It is indeed free to file Federal, and that’s despite the fact that I’d made well over $70k. The state fee was about $16 and change with the sales tax.

ParticipantThis probably doesn’t help you as it sounds like you got them don’t yesterday, but you can electronically file your federal taxes directly with the IRS, although there are income limits to use their free fillable forms, and it doesn’t cover state taxes:
