ParticipantThe decision came after a real issue emerged with punt blocking schemes. Watching Utah all year I think we all knew it was a matter of time before a team got us. It just so happens with OSU after they had two weeks of game prep.
How Rising explained it in post game he went to Whitt and told him his background. Whitt installs after a week of practice is my assumption and does it twice in a game. A game mind you that pretty much determines your season after the ASU loss. The second punt by Rising lead to the safety sealing win.Seems like Whitt is piecing together his best coaching ever. Even more so than 2008. Just because of the circumstances surrounding the season.
With the way Whitt is coaching Rising seems like the first QB since Johnson who is really able to play to his strengths. I always felt or maybe it has always been said that some of Utah’s qbs suffered under Whitt’s conservative style of play. I feel like specifically Wilson and Huntley really missed out because of playcalling. Rising looks to be as good as anything we have seen since Alex Smith’s sophomore season.

ParticipantHaving Rising as the punter should set the Utes up nicely for some fake punts too.

ParticipantOh yeah and Rising is a threat on the pass or simply thicc boi rush. Such a wrinkle on fourth downs. I also will call it now. He will do it against Stanford. Shhh don’t tell them.

ParticipantThat’s the first thing I thought. Line Rising up on 4th every time. The defense doesn’t know if it’s a punt or an attempt. It could be deadly as hell.

ParticipantWell, except we don’t know that Rising can boot it 60 yards when that is needed. That said, very impressed with his pooch punts, even got the backspin like a sand wedge. Anyway, I hope they also are getting the blocking scheme for punting perfected.

ParticipantRising may not be able “boot it 60 yards when needed”, but I can tell you for a fact that neither can our current punter. We were lucky to get 30 yards off most of his kicks, and that’s if he got it off at all.

Participant100% correct. Also when the blocking has been good enough the punter is sloooooowww to kick it. I would say from an advantage point not having a special teams coverage team gives Utah the edge. I would say I am not exactly thrilled if he punts from Utah’s own endzone or anything.

ParticipantThat’s the thing. It worked well for short punts, but I have my doubts about long ones. Hopefully the offense will be able to move it enough where a 60 yarder isn’t needed.
