ParticipantI’ve mentioned here before that I do a real dorky/nerdy thing where I compile all the rankings, wins, championships, heisman, all Americans, nfl draft picks, recruiting rankings and transfer portal rankings of the last 5 years and determine the best program of the last 5 years. Every team is in the workbook. The big xii ranks third in average team rating behind unsurprisingly the SEC and Big Ten. Here are the ratings as of now before preseason rankings and stuff comes out and before any 2025 games have been played. I think it’s interesting but also has some holes that need filled
#17 Cincinnati- probably riding on dominance of the American still
#22 TCU- runner up in the last 5 years
#25 Iowa state- surprised
#26 byu-p- COVID flung them up as well as last year
#27 Oklahoma state- surprised at how bad things are with gundy, won’t be down for long
#30 k-state- just a solid team every year
#31 Utah- last year and the year before were just that bad where we are down this far
#40 Baylor- how short of a leash does aranda have this year with the qb he has?
#45 Colorado- Travis hunter really helped this programs ranking
#48 Houston- playing in the American helped
#49 Arizona state- are they buy or sell for the next 5 years?
#53 Texas tech- money bags will help them I believe
#58- west Virginia
#59 ucf
#65 Arizona
#83 Kansas

ParticipantI’ve often wondered if K-Whitt has been operating as a semi-retired coach. From losing the past 5 bowl games in-a-row to giving the coach in waiting designation to Scalley, it’s often smelled as he’s playing more executive consultant than full time coach. I could be wrong. I am not close to the program—just my pure speculation.

ParticipantWhat about a team losing the past 5 bowl games makes you think their coach is more of an “executive consultant”?
I’m no closer to the program than you, but I am supremely confident that you’re wrong. The number that gets thrown around for the value of the Utah football team is $425 million. A D3 golf coach might get away with not really doing their job. Whitt, the highest-paid public employee in Utah, could not.

ParticipantWhere were we last year before the atrocious 5-7?

ALUF
ParticipantIn the high teens. Before that, Utah was top 15

ParticipantIt appears you are including 2020 in your analysis. Since that year was so uneven, what would it look like if you replaced 2020 with 2019? Granted, that would help Utah due to the stellar 2019 but it would also be a more accurate comparison, if just for normalizing number of games played.

ParticipantCovid is a once in a generation/lifetime outlier. I’d remove it.

ParticipantCovid is about to removed once 2025 games start
I’ve been thinking about doing an all-time one
