Would I bet on it? No. Do I think it is likely? No.
We would likely have to go 12-0 to make it to the CFP. Going undefeated is never an easy thing. Look at Georgia last year. Florida has never had a season where they won all of their games, yet they have a handful of national championships.
Could Utah go 12-0 and win the PAC12 championship game? Yes. I don’t think there is a game on their schedule that they cannot win. Yet, there will likely be a few games where we play below average. Can we do that and remain undefeated?
What has to happen IMO for us to have a chance at the CFP?
1. Key injuries must be limited. In 2004 and 2008 – we did not have many season-ending injuries. We cannot afford to see guys like Rising, Kuithe, or Phillips go down with a serious injury.
2. We need to win the turnover battle. We won’t win it every game, but it will be important in the big games.
3. Our special teams has to be MUCH improved. We were horrific (outside of Covey) last season. We cannot afford blocked punts and TDs on returns.
4. Our offense needs to deliver “chunk” plays. Rising needs to be able to open to the offense with some successful passes down-field. Our Oline needs to be ready to go on week 1, unlike last season.
5. Our defense needs to improve from last season. We need a consistent pass rush and find some linebackers who can replace Lloyd and Sewell. We cannot afford to have injuries at CB. Not enough depth there.
Go Utes!!!
