      Without looking it up.

What was the last year that the University of Utah Football team, at the end of the season, had an overall (all games ever played) losing record (below .500)?

Currenty the Utes are at 689-465-32 (.597), that ranks 29th in the country

      Bonus:

      Same question but for TDS?

If I remember right for the Utes it was 2013 and can’t remember if the TDS was 2017 or 18.

No, that is just for a season. The question is referencing all-time record, meaning when was the last time that Utah football was below .500 all-time, i.e. an overall record of something like 249-250.

For Utah, I’m guessing we were last under .500 back in the 1930s with us coming somewhat close to dipping below .500 back in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

For BYU, I’m guessing they were last under .500 all-time back in the 1980s.

      Not a bad guess.

FYI the lowest the record dropped in the 80’s-90’s was in 1992 at 466-354-32 (.568)

And yes, for the TDS it was in the early 80’s

I became a Utah football fan in the early 2000s, so I don’t know much of the history before then. I do enjoy a good puzzle though, so I figured I’d hazard a guess based on some simple mathematics.
The last few decades of Utah football have been very successful, so I made the assumption that our Utes were widening the gap between wins and losses during that time. Using the numbers you provided, and an average season win total of 8-4, it would have been around 1964 the last time Utah was an even .500. A less optimistic average season of 7-5 predicts the last .500 season as 1908!

How did I do? Both estimates assume a 12 game season of course, which I know hasn’t always been the case.

Nice use of your math brain UteDuke, your less optimistic average was much closer.

I know that everyone must be dying to know the answer.

The last season where the Utes ended with an overall sub .500 record was 1903. That year the University of Utah had three wins verses the 12th infantry, Fort Douglas, and Ogden High School. Also according to the record books the University of Utah is 0-2 against the YMCA. I hate those guys!

As far as the TDS they had an overall losing record up until the end of the 1983 season.

And to add to your in state record knowledge Utah State is currently 4 games under .500 on their overall record with 513-520-28 (0.498)

It looks like they’re SEVEN games under .500.
