This is pretty surprising, I thought he was the one to most likely be back. In a season of very erratic lineups/rotations, his role seemed to be the most consistent with no competition at his position. He also figures to have a lot to gain from a coach who played the same position.
I think he’ll be back. Ultimately, I think this is to test the waters. If Utah truly does now have $6 million to work with in NIL, I would assume that he sees this as an opportunity to gauge his value. I would expect him to be back while earning more NIL than he would have without testing the portal.
Yeah I think you’re right that it’s likely just a procedural method to improve his deal. His statement seems to intentionally communicate that he’s still interested in returning.
Look, I want Wahlin to be back but I’m not going to get broken up over a guy who’s stat line is 6 PPG, 5 RPG, and 1 APG. Those stats have “role player” written all over them. My biggest concern about his departure is his leaving when he’s a local guy about to be coached by a local legend that just happened to play his position.
This is a dumb take. There are only so many shots to go around. Teams need role players to be successful. With his play style he can be very helpful on a good team. Hustles, rebounds, defends, assists, and can score with the opportunity presents itself.
You know what’s a dumb take Rusty? Thinking that Wahlin is more than what he’s shown over the last two seasons, which is a role player. I don’t know if you actually read my comment or if you went from zero to crazy in a second, but I did start by saying that I indeed wanted Wahlin to be back.
Role players are much easier to find, recruit and sign than a high star prospect. So, yeah, a few role players are needed. But, if we loose one, so be it. I agree Miami. That being said, he might be more than a role player. I see some upside in his development already. Time will tell.
Bro where did I say he was more than a role player? I don’t think YOU read my message. I was stating the value of role players and how dumb it was to diminish the value of one.
I’m with you Rusty. I think Wahlin is a unique player at 6’10. If he can learn to hit the corner 3 with his size and length he could be a starting role player. Jensen will want him for sure. He is only a sophomore. Next year he should take a big step forward. Smith never established a role for him.
