2008 National Champ replied to the topic Hypothetical: Who's your pick for Utah HC (assuming KW leaves)? in the forum Football 5 months ago
Scalley could go anywhere from 0-12 to 12-0 and it wouldn’t surprise me. Lake is just one possible outcome. I’m sure if I, or someone else, wanted to research it we’d find more success stories than failures but it would be close to fitty-fitty.
There’s no guarantees in life and Scalley’s HC performance is yet to be written. I do think though…[Read more]

google Jimmy Lake and tell me the comparison isn’t apt other than Scalley hasn’t gotten the HC slot yet.
career spent on one side of the ball? check
moved from DB coach to DC to HC? almost there
considered a great recruiter and motivator? check
spent the bulk, if not all of his career under one of the top coaches? check
has his own ideas about…[Read more] -
2008 National Champ replied to the topic What do we know about UCF? in the forum Football 5 months ago
UCF is going to run all day and if they can get Scalley to abandon the middle like he’s been doing lately, they’ll break a couple of big runs. It could get 2021 Utah v Stanford bad where the Utes piled up 400 yards on the ground.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Whitt’s Decision in the forum Football 5 months ago
Sal: to me the calculus is different. The Tennessee job, or the SC job he was offered after 2008, would have required moving his family and going to a place where the expectations are always going to be oversized. Not many coaches get the choice of staying home which was always Utah’s best selling point for Whitt.
Retiring early, on the other…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Wilson debacle is on Whit in the forum Football 5 months ago
We know his true potential, but only because he got high leverage game reps which was my point. Holding a clipboard all year wasn’t going to slow down the game for him because you can’t simulate those stressors in practice, or even scrimmages. Without a remake of his throwing motion, and apparently a maturity upgrade when dealing with his peers,…[Read more]

I wonder if Whitt reverts to coachspeak at home.
Wife: Did you take out the garbage like I asked?
Whitt: I will evaluate, obviously, before the day is over, but my removal of the garbage will be based on what’s best for the house, not what’s best for me. It will be completely determined on how I feel this house is best served going forward.…[Read more]

Probably just here to Urban Meyer us. Which I’m ok with.
If those two years are DeBoer at UW level, sign me up.
The truth as I see it is that any coach who wins 9 games at Utah will be a commodity going forward. And I’ll take as many of those as you’re willing to throw at me. Whitt is a unicorn and current recruits have no idea who McBride i…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Wilson debacle is on Whit in the forum Football 5 months ago
Playing Wilson this year just moved up the inevitable. We got to see his true talent level and decision making instead of putting all of the 2025 hopes on him. And quite frankly, as bad as the Wilson hype was for the last 2 years, the lead up to 2025 would have been insufferable around these parts if he’d rode the pine this year.

If the stories are true, it was Taylor who put his foot down on starting Huntley. Whitt wanted to go with Williams

Cignetti just signed a deal worth ~ 1.5 MM more per annum than Whitt makes. That’s a non-starter

2008 National Champ replied to the topic What is the path for HS coach to D1? in the forum Football 5 months ago
we’ve all forgotten a Utah example.
Troy Taylor coach Jake Browning at Folsom HS, went to Eastern Washington as OC, Freddie Whitt played the part of Marvis Barry in Back to the Future, Taylor OC’d at Utah then took over his own FCS program before Stanford.

The biggest problems with bringing in a HS coach in any capacity are their lack of recruiting acumen and they can’t bring their own coaches with them. And isn’t there still a rule that you can’t recruit from their school for 2 years?

I’m okay with giving Whitt a prove it year but only on the condition that he overhauls his entire offensive staff. I wouldn’t commit to 3 years under any circumstances based on his proximity to retirement and downward trend of results

A HS coaches best chance is to catch on as a coordinator. The example I know about is Art Briles who was running a new offense and trucking people in Texas. He got hired on as Houston’s OC, then moved to HC before taking the Baylor job.
I’m sure there are more but the only high school HC going straight to top level college HC I remember was…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic I want out of this shitty conference. in the forum Football 5 months ago
I’ve purposely avoided saying anything bad about the Big12 other than that I would rather be in a west coast conference. But I do wish Big12 school / fan would recognize that Utah joining that conference without Oklahoma and Texas in it would be like any of their teams joining a PAC-12 without USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington. They wouldn’t be…[Read more]
