  Does anyone remember the “Just Paying Our Tithing” T-shirts BYU made in the late 80’s when they had won 9 out of 10 games against Utah?
  
  It feels like it is time for us to bring those back. Would you buy one?

  Lose the tithing, but a big 9 is sexy. What does tithing have to do with Utah or our 10th straight next year? Just another thing for uptight Mormons (as opposed to those who aren’t) to get more uptight about. They’re persecuted enough with poo poo as it is.

    Agreed. Let’s stay away from tithing. BYU fans get offended over other things too easily.
    
    I do not offend easily, but using someone’s sacred sacrifice should not be tolerated from any group or any belief. It could be tithing or pilgrimages, or offerings, peace Corp volunteers etc. These are all perosnal and often difficult sacrifices made. These should be celebrated, not belittled and used as part of a joke.

      BYU just doesn’t generate enough revenue to be self sustaining. If it was, don’t you think they’d privatize it? Notre Dame for Catholics at 49,685 USD, Brandeis at 51,245 USD (“Jewish BYU” according to one Jewish friend who went there to meet a boychik) are private and are priced like private universities–what makes BYU magically cheaper to run? The answer is, it’s not. Not really. The church is known for underpaying its employees but not 90 percent less. No wonder application numbers are what they are.

      Math is math and math makes incentives. And it’s priced to make it irresistible to Mormon students. Meanwhile the beneficiaries on Cougarboard treat you like a lesser person. Harvard of the West. It’s a net wealth transfer from some members to other members. I respect the sanctity of the widow’s mite. I think trivializing this on a football rivalry tshirt does everyone involved a disservice, especially to those most likely to keep it all going. At your expense.

        Go ahead and hate the Mormon church, I really don’t care. But, this kind of crap belongs on Utefans not here. I appreciate a Ute sports site that doesn’t try to attack someone’s religion, politics, etc. I come here because it am a Ute fan and hate it when anyone gets attacked because of their beliefs, etc.

        As I pointed out, I am actually opposing the tithing tshirt because I think it is trivial and an unnecessary putdown that is unconstructive and unhelpful. Most of my family is LDS and I support that. We should all be better neighbors to each other. I respect your right to disagree. I also think you ought to be able to know how much of BYU is subsidized by your tithing. Generally I think the church has a strong track record and deliberately avoids risk and any appearance of waste. The church gets up and talks about how responsibly the funds are used during general conference, but when it comes to BYU it’s not like you get to see for yourself.

        More to the point, byu gets used as a laundering clearinghouse to avoid excise taxes when money is transferred from other countries into the US. In England and Canada, contributions to religious orgs gain matching tax moneys. If that money is then moved out of country, those matching funds are to be repaid, plus an additional excise tax.
        
        But if the money can get sent directly to byu first, then those taxes and penalties can be avoided. Over the last decade there have been several transfers of tithing funds out of the UK and Canada (and presumably other countries) and through byu, each coming in near $100M. Much of that is actually money matched by UK/Canada, and was intended for charitable purposes within the boundaries of those countries.
        
        That byu is used to launder money is another reason why we need to roll our eyes when byu fans get high and mighty.

        Numbers leaked about a dozen years ago, and byu’s line item in the church (non-taxed budget) was just under a cool $1B. Total CES budget was $1.4B-ish, out of a total tithing income stream of $7B. This is the reason byu costs less than most community colleges, which is the reason they are ‘competitive’ at admissions.
        
        Take away that subsidy and the smart/rich kids who go there now will end up at a better school. Plenty of smart kids near me would go to UW, Harvard, Stanford, etc., but byu is so stupid cheap that they save tens of thousands going there.

  BYU is in the rear view mirror, both literally and figuratively. Making any kind of t-shirt regarding them is extraordinarily small time.
