When Mac took over the team in 1990, our football program was in dire straits.  To make matters worse – BYU was on top of the world.  I will always appreciate what Mac did to turn things around.  Meyer took things to the next level, but we were still a MWC team.

I remember when Utah entered the Pac 12, many friends (especially BYU fans) said we were in way over our heads.  Fast forward to 2020 and we have won the South two consecutive years.  In spite of losing many key players, Phil Steele and others still have us ranked in the top 3 of the entire conference.  Think about it – we are picked higher than ASU, UW, Stanford, etc.  Quite impressive!  I would love to become a perennial national power someday.

We have come a long way in the last 30 years.  I am one who had season tickets and survived back-to-back 1-10 seasons in the 1970s.  I remember when Utah football was not taken seriously.

I hope we get a season in.  I love college football!

      Go Utes!!!

Totally agree. It is amazing how we’ve gotten to this point. I too want to see us continue taking steps forward and I don’t see any reason why our goal can’t be to become a national power out West each year. Everything comes down to recruiting. If we can raise the bar to a level where we pull in 10 4* recruits each year then the sky‘s the limit. Urban Meyer said it best on a recent Crimson Corner podcast, Salt Lake City and the University of Utah have everything in place to be a college football power. Go Utes!!!

Indeed, if you would have told me back in the mid-80s, following another losing season in the WAC with most home contests in half empty stands, and yet another loss to you know who, that over the next several decades we would have 2 undefeated seasons, a Fiesta Bowl win with perhaps 50,000 Utah fans attending, a decisive Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama, be playing competatively in the PAC12, and have a 9 game winning streak against that old rival, not to mention a couple of stadium expansions, I would have had a hard time believing it could happen.

So grateful for Ron McBride, Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham, all the assistant coaches and players, as well as all the fans who have been on this fun ride.   Yearning for the time we can all sit (and often stand) in Rice-Eccles and watch our Utes again.

Don’t forget to also include Dr. Chris Hill in your list of recognitions!  He started us down that road before even hiring McBride!
