They are the #8 team in the country. After seeing our secondary in action, are you certain we’d roll them up?

#13 in the rankings that matter.

They struggled with UT San Antonio, beat a Boise team missing its most important players, and have beat up on a bunch of teams that have nothing but slightly above average high school kids on their rosters.

I was weary about a potential matchup with them me a few weeks ago, but I’ve come to my senses. There’s a reason they’ve lost 9 in a row to Utah.

Our secondary is fine. The.problems lie with our QB and OL positions

We’d roll them up.  They didn’t “earn” their ranking.  They just backed into it.  They’re still the same WACish and midmajory team they’ve always been, with the exception that their schedules are substantially weaker than usual.

They won’t lose to SDSU, and I really don’t think they would lose to us. I know people don’t want to give them any credit, and neither do I, but here are the facts.

      1. Zach Wilson is the best QB that we’ve played against or will play against this year.

      2. The BYU O Line is experienced and have played really well, even if it’s been against lesser talent.

      3. The BYU D Line is average to above average.

      4. Our O Line can’t stop a 3 man rush.

      5. Jake Bentley has been very below average for a P5 QB.

This was always going to be their best chance at beating us and after watching both teams play, I think they would.

Painful as it is, this was BYU’s best year to beat Utah. If Wilson plays next year and all of their seniors on defense stick around, BYU should be even better and they Utah at home as Harlan willfully agreed to with this years game at Utah canceled.

Sitake is developing into a very good head coach. Unless Utah gets their s**t together on offense, next years game at BYU should be interesting. Like it or not, Zach Wilson is a damn good football player. Utah may have a QB problem next year unless Bentley can settle in and change his gun-slinging ways. KW has yet to figure out unlike his competitors, you can’t just win with a run game.

Wilson would be stupid to stick around. If he’s projected as a first round pick he needs to go. Byu will be starting over next year.

Mm.. Ug .. so if we have destroy them in recruiting every year and they is such a gap in talent, add the fact that we’ve had some of the best recruiting class, the last few years; not to mention how many players we’ve put in the NFL.. tell me where is the disconnect ? .. This game to me shouldn’t even be a question on who’s better .. and personally I still think we win with a few more games under our belt .

No question Utah out recruits BYU on defense. Agree, ZW would be dumb to stay next Fall. Utah has a young defense that will be rock solid in the years to come. Utah may out recruit BYU in some areas of offense.

IMO couch riding fan opinion, BYU recruits better at Oline and QB, for the moment anyway and has an established offensive system that Utah seems to be still trying to figure out. Losing Rising and Shelley is a bummer. Utah recruits better at RB and WR/TE. Huntley was a great recruit by Dennis Erickson. I hope Ludwig is going full Jerry Maquire with Costelli. Go Utes!

I agree. If they played the game I think Utah wins. But they didnt play the game, byu has been playing and now everyone thinks Wilson is great. I don’t think he’s taken a serious jump in talent between last year and this year. All I’m saying is, if he can go in the first round, he’s gone.

I will say this though, if our O line continues to struggle, byu would have a real shot at beating us

It’s easier to “develop into a good head coach” when you play a schedule that weak.

On the 3 man rush you might be referring to the Bentley Fumble? There were 5 defenders active at the Line of Scrimage, Despite Beth Mowins saying Bentley got sacked on a 3 man rush. On linebacker at the line of scrimage stepped forward, then spied and took the RB leaking out. 3 D-lineman bull rushed and one LB pursued the middle of the pocket with a slight delayed blitz which is the reason Bently didn’t step up in the pocket.  A freshman right tackle did get beat but Bentley was far out of the pocket by the time the fumble occured. Just my .02 cent observation.

Zach Wilson isn’t sticking around. As much as I’m sure he would love to beat Utah. This is as high as his stick is going to get. He’s injury prone and if he came back with a normal college football season everyone would be watching and criticizing every wrong thing he did. He’s a first round pick NOW. I’ve personally always liked the kid. He’s above the zoob noise and nonsense. He will be home after this year. And any Player has had a sniff of the NFL will be gone too. Only the uncle Rico’s who want to play until there eligibility runs out will be back. So no, this year is the best chance they have. Although, I am shocked by our o-line. As I’ve been saying Harding needs to go.

We have difficulty comparing teams at different levels.  It is easy to get lost.  A P5 team struggling to beat a couple of the top P5 when a couple of plays can make all the difference can be frustrating to watch.  What that clearly tells us is we are not quite there related to top P5.  How we will do against the middle and bottom of the conference is an assumption.  How we would do against MWC teams becomes a wild assumption.  How we would look against the Y’s schedule is comparable to matching HS teams from 6A and 3A crazy.  Try to imagine vagas putting a line on a Utah vs North Alabama line if they were to play next week.

Still, as was the case last year, the Y will catch P5 teams in an upset.  But like last year, it is occasional and can’t be maintained week in and week out.  Last year, maybe their best year, if they were to play 9 P5 games, no doubt they would lose more than they win.

In 2020 the Y has benefited by no conference rules related to quarantine for exposed players.   They simply act in their own self-interest.  They also benefit from having their team spike in the summer getting that mess somewhat out of the way.

Please don’t assume that the Y would look the same with a MWC schedule and goodness not with a P5 schedule.  Our biggest lesson moving to the P5 was there is a world of difference between getting up for a couple of big games a year and playing 9 or 10 big games in a row.  Please don’t assume the Utah shortcomings we noted in the first 2 weeks would be there if we were playing the Y’s schedule.  So exactly how do you compare teams from extremely different levels of competition?  With wild assumptions.

As for SDS,  I saw a game several weeks ago and they had a few RBs that are much better than anything the Y has faced.  I think the game will be much more of a match than most expect.  They could put an end to this wet dream.

As for Utah, when both teams have the same practice time and the 2020 issues are aside, with or without Wilson, Utah will give the Y a mountain too great to climb.  I don’t share the concern some have.

Well SDS did not good at all tonight.  Looks like the Y will finish undefeated, 2 and 0 in the MWC and one of the better G5 teams.
