BlockedI’m sure an agreement has been made or the dismissal of Larry wouldn’t have been done. My guess the next head coach of the University of Utah is still coaching right now.

ParticipantPope is still coaching.

ParticipantPope is getting worked by UCLA at the moment…
-
Ute Dub
ParticipantYeah. We should hire whoever wins the Naty!
-
PlainsUte
ParticipantWe don’t need a new coach to lose to UCLA.
-
Ute Dub
ParticipantI know, we should get UCLA’s coach, right?
-

ParticipantDoubt we’d get a Pac-12 lateral transfer. Who are the up-and-coming MAC, MVC, Summit League coaches?
For example, Oral Roberts’ Paul Mills spent 9 years at Baylor.

ParticipantI’d take Pope in a heartbeat, bring Burgess, he’ll get a bump in recruiting with the PAC 12, and his players love him.

ParticipantGoodness, Pope is a tool. He is in one of the few locations that would welcome him.

KeymasterPope? I’d rather lose an eye.

ParticipantPlease excuse my ignorance because I really haven’t been following hoops closely the last several years. But what is it about Pope (other than the obvious fact he coaches our rival) that turns Ute fans off? I heard a recent Bill Riley interview of former Ute player Chris Grant and he was saying how jealous he was of the Y because of Pope and their entire staff, including guys like Burgess, that have been out-recruiting us and instilling tons of confidence in the players they have. Are we for sure against the idea of trying to poach Pope from the zoobs if we are unable to get Alex Jensen?

ParticipantPope made some generally nasty comments after we beat them last year. Plus he poached our best signed and committed recruit last year by hiring his dad at the school. But a big portion of my hatred of that guy is because he played for THEM. The one school we never directly refer to.

ParticipantThanks for the insights, I wasn’t aware that he made nasty comments after we beat them. Unless I’m mistaken I believe Pope played for Washington and then Kentucky.

ParticipantIf Pope is announced as our next coach, then my first phone call will be to Harlan’s office to ask for Larry to get a contract extension instead.

ParticipantYes Utah’s next basketball coach is still coaching…….in the NBA
I maintain Alex Jensen will not take the job which means Utah’s next coach is likely Jonnie Bryant.
Pope is the Wizard of OZ. He’s just smoke and mirrors. The real work at BYU is done by Burgess and Fluger the assistants.

Matthew Thomas Castleton
ParticipantI think if offered and given a pay increase Jensen could not pass up the opportunity. I truly think Utah has a serious chance to make the Tournament next season with the roster they have. And make a run in said tournament. What better way to make a name for yourself as a coach then to shine in the Tournament?

ParticipantDon’t get me wrong I’d would be doing cartwheels if Alex took the job and would happily eat crow and ask for seconds.
He is and should be the first choice as Coach. I just think in the end he’ll stay in the NBA.
A close second is JB. He’s a smart young energetic coach who will put some life back into the program.

ParticipantIf it’s Bryant, we HAVE TO pull Burgess from down south as an asst.
