Good stuff. What is Dawes’ deviation.
My assumption is he has the most whiplash of any Utah player, 20 minutes one night, 2 the next.

Hey Eagle, actually I don’t mind taking the trip up to Laramie. I’ve always wanted to see a game there and this contest gives me the perfect opportunity. I’ve already made reservations and, boy, am I glad I could use hotel points to do so. I don’t know if anyone has checked but hotel prices in Laramie make what the Grand America charges in SLC…[Read more]

Rick and Emerson I also think a consistent point guard playing big minutes would create more stability and define roles better. Seems like Smith’s rotations are based on who won’t turn the ball over and that varies depending on how good the other teams defense.

you could be right. lower talent level makes it harder to settle in.

I’m definitely surprised. Nice expected us to finish bottom 3.
The program has a long way to go, but I’m not terribly disappointed in the season.

I don’t think Smith is a bad coach. He has overachieved with the talent he has. Problem is recruiting and NIL. He has been unable to recruit top talent and donors don’t want to support a losing team or a coach that hasn’t proven he can win.

To be fair to Coach Smith I think the biggest problem related to this is talent level. The U simply doesn’t have one player who could be considered an NBA-level player in a few years. We may have a few European-level. We also don’t have a dog – a player who just gets after it 100% of the time. So what do you do as a coach? Smith is choosing to…[Read more]

I’d like to see someone with NBA ties. Good players want to play in the NBA. It has worked for TDS so far. Bryant and Jensen have both Utah ties and NBA ties.

Guys, I’m bored today so I ran some very simple (and probably not statistically valid) stats to check on the inconsistent lineups question below.
Here’s what I did:I took the top 11 players in minutes played from Utah and TDS for comparison.
I created an average and standard deviation of minutes played for each of the players.
I only did…[Read more] -

Living in Big D and next door neighbor is a Baylor grad so have a short road trip planned with him for November 15th. And fellow Utes, if you make the trip to Waco be sure and plan on going 20 miles north on I35 to West, Texas for some fantastic Czech cuisine such as kolache, klobasnek and strudels as the town has one of the largest concentrations…[Read more]

Indeed pretty much all of our regular players have their outstanding games, but none of them have had consistently good performances and most of them have had a number of rather bad outings.

Yes, pleasantly surprised. YTD, the Men’s BB has overachieved a bit in B12 Hoops and in 2024 the FB team underachieved…

The current state of the basketball program doesn’t feel great and so I understand the criticisms.
That said, I agree w/ Kellso. It’s hard to be disappointed w/ a 5-6 conference record (and a win over TDS) in what is one of the best conferences in the country, if not the best, during our first year transitioning in and after we lost our two best…[Read more]

Amazing stat NarfUte. You would not expect that from a team that lacks talent. Anyone can shoot and make a free throw. FT % should be a strength not a weakness.

NarfUte replied to the topic Utah Basketball in the BIG12 in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 months ago
There are 355 NCAA collegiate men’s basketball teams. Utah is ranked #352 in FT %. With that, i’m surprised they’ve won any games.

A very respectable result came early in the year against Mississippi State (on a “neutral court” in the same state). Kept it close the whole way against a team projected (last I checked) as a 7 seed in the Big Dance.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Utah Basketball in the BIG12 in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 months ago
This team has over achieved with the talent level and so many new players. Problem is our high water mark won’t get us a trip to the dance.

I don’t think Smith is capable of recruiting Big12 talent Miami. He is coaching Mountain West caliber players. Other than Carlsen (coach K recruit) I can’t think of any NBA talent on roster in 4 years.
It will take a Dion type hire with deeper NIL pockets to turn things around. If we want to compete in the Big 12 and sell tickets it’s going…[Read more]
