I don’t think helton is let go yet.  swaan is meeting with him at noon today.  interesting to see if it happens because he just gave him a 2023 extension with 15 million buyout.  bad move on swaan.

I still see Kyle retiring around age 60-62 (2019-2021).  Perhaps he will stick around until the end of his contract (2023?).  He has said one of his own personal tragedies was seeing his father die so young, and that he wanted to spend some time enjoying life after football.

FTR, Fred ‘Mad Dog’ Whittingham was 64 when he died during the 2003 season.

Outside perspective from UW on Utah

Comments: Utah had a crazy season in 2017. They pulled off just three wins in conference play. However, four of their six losses were all within a single possession. They are also the only team in the conference to have won a postseason game.

The Utes project as a more balanced team in 2018. They have most of their key offensive pieces coming back including Huntley, Moss and WR Raelon Singleton. The offensive line looks fairly well set. They are, however, going to have to do some defensive rebuilding. Anae, Barton, DB Julian Blackmon and DL Leki Fotu look like the key building blocks.

UW fans are spread all across the board on Utah. While there is a clear convergence around 2nd and 3rd place predictions, nearly 13% of respondents thought that Kyle Whittingham has what it takes to lead the Utes to a division title in 2018. We shall see.

There has always been missionaries who have flipped schools upon completion of their two years.  (Or in the case of TDS athletes 6-8 months).  However it seems the pace has recently picked up.  Probably since players would rather play for Sitake than that oddball Mendenhall.

Its not just Utah who is being impacted, Oregon, Norte Dame, Oregon State, and Stanford all come to mind.

it must be frustrating for the coaching staff to invest so much time and effort into a recruit who then changes his mind 24 months later.  There is also the lost opportunity cost…who didn’t we recruit because that position and scholarship was filled.

There is a very easy solution.  For every missionary that flips, don’t sign future games.  Instead schedule USU, Weber State, or SUU.  The Zoob legislators may get apoplectic but financially the games would generate additional income for those “state” athletic departments and not a private institution.

The fact is TDS needs Utah on their schedule to help with their rotten home schedule.  We don’t need to schedule TDS.  Our conference assures us at least 9 P5 games.

They recruit one of ours…they get Middle Tennessee instead of Utah on their 2023 schedule.

    2024.

I’d bet that we don’t play FBYU-P those two years. I’d bet that we have already told FBYU-P that we aren’t playing them those two years. I’d bet FBYU-P will announce some other P5 deal and then talk about how it just doesn’t work out to play Utah those two years.

    One can hope, right?

Maybe if they save face with this, we can start to play them less and less after this. Especially if they go into the game  with a 12 game losing streak…

Yeah, good point. Because we are little brother and a small time school that can’t even get G5 schools to respect us.

I’d bet it is because that is just the way the seasons line up. For example, we have SJSU at home this year.

    2020: Utah @ Wyoming

    2021: G5 @ Utah

    2022: Utah @ G5

2023: G5 @ Utah. We also play Baylor this year

    2024: Utah @ G5. Baylor this year.

    2025: Wyoming @ Utah

The problem is LK3 just signed a contract through 2023. I don’t know what the buyout is, but it has to be substantial.

UW is stuck with Romar again, and will probably just wait out the final two years of his contract (he makes $1.7M/yr, buyout is $3.4M, a new coach will be even more expensive, and the UW athletic dept LOST $14M this year).

I do think there should be some changes in the coaching staff, however.
