The thing is, at least under Whitt, there is a huge gap between what Utah was capable of doing with Rising and BJ compared to the other quarterbacks that rolled through SLC (I’ll throw in Huntley for good measure).

Only once: 2015 with Travis Wilson, has Utah won nine regular season games with a QB other than Huntley or Rising in the post-MWC era. So, while Rising wasn’t elite by national standards, he certainly was elite by Utah standards. And that’s really the point: the gap between a Rising/Huntley and even a Travis Wilson is significant.

If Utah is actually going to finish 9-3, I suspect Dampier will have to be a lot closer to Rising and Huntley than pretty much every other QB we’ve seen over the last 15 or so years.

Sling has a new option this year that you can pay for a single day for $4.99, but if its on ESPN + your only option is to purchase a month of ESPN+. However, last year there weren’t many games on ESPN+.

If you have family with traditional cable you can typically use their password to watch on the various apps.

Did something change about ESPN+? I’m pretty sure many of Utah’s games will not be on ESPN+.
If I recall correctly, last year there were only a small number of Utah games on ESPN+.

only when compared to the average Utah QB

Penix, Williams and Nix were elite QB’s. Rising was in the next tier down. Still pretty damn good but not elite

They also have nothing to go off of. There is only so much to write about a team when all you can see is the roster and if you’re lucky you can get an interview with a kid that had been coached up on what he can reveal to the program. My biggest hope is that Scalley brings the fans back into the equation… we are just a necessary evil for Whitt.

All of this talk about “elite Utah QBs” is pretty funny. I have followed my Utes since the mid-1970s and the only actual elite QBs we have had are Scott Mitchell and Alex Smith. Decent? Yes. Serviceable? Yes. Gamers? Yes. But not elite. I will happy if Devon is just decent and doesn’t turn the ball over. If he exceeds that then wonderful.

What I am really excited to see is our running game. If we can get that thing uncorked, this team will go places. The two new backs this year are a substantial upgrade from recent years past and I feel we have the O-line to open up some holes. If Dampier is decent, I see us winning 9 games.

Am I the only crazy person without recency bias? (Kidding)

As for starting out the year, wasn’t it just a couple years ago the pig farmer hucked it on the first play of the game getting the Utes to like the 15 yard line against Florida? AND let’s not forget Barnes beat USC. That only makes the frustration of the QB situation last year that much more frustrating. Two years ago Kyle shut down the offense instead of letting them play, and last year was abysmal on offense. Rose should have started more games last year.

I’m looking forward to the first game to hopefully get that putrid taste of last year out of my mouth.

Am I the only one who isn’t experiencing the usual ramping up as we get closer to opening day?

I feel like I’m checking the usual sources as often as I have in the past. And I’m just not getting that external push. It’s almost like with all of the unknowns going into the first season without the Quarterback who shall not be named, all of the urinalists are afraid to do their usual hype articles.

Utah’s offense will only be successful with a credible passing attack. The defenses Utah will face are good enough to stymie the running game if they don’t have to worry about the passing attack.

I have no idea if he will pass well enough. I’m looking forward to finding out and hoping for a stellar offense.

It can’t be that bad. It’ll only be September. It’s the November games you’ll want nothing to do with.
