Yesterday, I witnessed a woman hitting the sides of watermelons with her open palm. I smiled big at her. She shot me a quick smirk, then put in her cart what I can only assume to be her favourite sounding melon.
My mother always thumped melons before buying them. What she hoped to hear was never clear to me, but she always did several before making her final selection so she must have gained some information.
