The Rose Bowl didn’t turn out the way any of us wanted. Oh well. We made it to the Rose Bowl for the second consecutive year. I went out and bought a Rose Bowl shirt today in fact. I am proud we were there and I will wear my shirt proudly.
Why did we lose? Not having Kincaid and Phillips turned out to be huge. Nonetheless, we played toe-to-toe with Penn State until the unfortunate failed trick play. Then … Rising getting injured was a big deal. We learned that Barnes isn’t ready for the big time and Pnee State exploited that with a relentless rush. It would not have worked against Rising IMO. Two mistakes on defense (by the same player) cost us 14 points on 80+ yard plays.
We all learned last night in the MNF game how minor our loss really was in the big scheme of things. There is a lot to be excited about in 2023.
The worst thing about today is that it will be eight months until we play again.
Go Utes!!!
Do you think it had a little to do with the offensive scheme? I am not FIRE LUDWIG but you have to admit that gameplan literally played to zero of Utah’s strengths.
In a way – I do. But, I am not a coach with all the info that Ludwig has. But, Yes, I would have:
– Played Johnson in the wildcat at least 4 or 5 times (I just don’t get why we didn’t do this.)
– Ran Jackson more often
– Trained Vele to throw the ball away when he sees Cam covered on trick plays
Our offense produced 200 yards against a very good Penn State defense in the first half. Had Rising played the remainder of the game – who knows what we could have or would have done. The biggest issue IMO is that we were missing our two top receivers. We are an offense built on using the tight ends and our WRs were not getting open. We could Monday-morning-QB this game forever and it won’t change a thing.
There are many sporting events during the next eight months. Go, Utes.
