Caveat: this is a straight resume ranking. I do everything I can to eliminate bias and it is not intended to be a predictor of future results.

      Through Week 5 – Pac rank…Overall Rank… Team… Next Opponent

      1. (7) UCLA (Utah)
      2. (9) Southern California (WSU)
      3. (19) Oregon (@ Arizona)
      4. (28) Washington State (@ USC)
      5. (35) Washington (@ ASU)
      6. (38) Utah (@ UCLA)
      7. (54) California (bye)
      8. (58) Oregon State (@ Stanford)
      9. (66) Arizona (Oregon)
      10. (79) Stanford (Oregon State)
      11. (107) Arizona State (UW)
      12. (116) Colorado (bye)

Assuming the favorites win this week (Utah, Oregon, USC, Washington, Oregon State), Utah will get the biggest bump which should be reflected in the polls setting up a 6 v 8 (or 9) matchup against SC next week.

You are making judgments about the value of each team’s resume. How on earth does that remove bias? It could, depending on how you do it, but if you are just eyeballing every team’s “resume” then you’re ranking is useless.

The only bias i have is which categories i choose to rank teams by. After that, the math is the math and as long as i don’t put my thumb on the scale, it is as clean as i can make it.

Is your disapproval because you think Utah is too low? They’ve beaten teams that are 3-2, 2-3, 1-4 and FCS while losing to a 3-2. That’s not exactly murderer’s row and is below average when compared to other teams of similar record. This is the first week Utah will have a quality opponent based on what has happened this year instead of what a fan of any team wants to believe (bias).

Do you still think I underrated Utah?

I think it worth noting that UCLA, although undefeated, have a strength of schedule (games played) in the bottom fourth of FBS programs. Here’s masseyratings.com Pac-12 page.

I was thinking about that. Outside of Washington, UCLA hasn’t played anyone.  Outside of UCLA, the only team Washington has played is Michigan State who has turned out to be a joke. UCLA beat South Alabama by one point at home on a field goal as time expired. Michigan State has only beat Western Michigan and Akron. Not predicting a win but UCLA’s body of work is underwhelming.

Through Week 6: Pac Rank… OA Rank… Team… Next Opponent

      1. (2) Southern Cal (Utah)
      2. (7) UCLA (Bye)
      3. (19) Oregon (Bye)
      4. (32) Utah (USC)
      5. (33) WSU (Oregon State)
      6. (45) Oregon State (WSU)
      7. (47) Cal (Colorado)
      8. (67) Washington (Arizona)
      9. (68) Arizona (Washington)
      10. (71) Arizona State (Bye)
      11. (92) Stanford (Notre Dame)
      12. (113) Colorado (Cal)

Due to a big bump in Adjusted SOS (all 5 of Utah’s FBS Opponents to date won), and a good loss to UCLA, Utah actually improved in my ranking. Winning this week should get the Utes into the my top 25. Since I put a premium on winning all of your games, in the early season undefeated teams naturally score higher. As more data points come available, teams like an undefeated Coastal Carolina or James Madison will get passed up by someone like Oregon (assuming they still have one loss) because they will have better wins.
