Thamel reporting Barnes getting the nod to start.
hmm…🤨
If so, so much for the “inside” report from someone who said they ran into Scalley the next day. Supposedly Barnes was done for the season with broken ribs.
Wow! If true, that’s a shocker. All Whitt has been saying the for the last two weeks is Nate, Nate, and Nate backed up by Rose and Bottari. I mean, has Barnes even been practicing? Just think that such s momentous move would have been picked up by at least one of the team’s beat writers. If not, that’s a big time miss on their part. Seems like the Utah QB room is a schizophrenic place to be at this time. With that in mind, look for Rising to start.
The local beat writers have no ties inside the program. Its kind of a bummer.
This tells me Whitt thinks we can win this one with defense, 17 points, and no turn over. NJ has thrown it to the other team a lot more than Barns and has put it on the ground more too.
No, look up the stats, Barnes has thrown more INT’s this season than Nate, but yes, Nate has fumbled more.
That’s what’s frustrated me with Barnes this season, he’s the safe game manager who won’t lose you the game. But he has more TO’s then Nate, has held the ball too long and been inconsistent in keeping the offense on time and moving. Oh and he’s scored less points then Nate as well (throwing and running).
just because the other team has hands of stone doesn’t mean Johnson hasn’t thrown it to them regularly
Link?
The only thing I could find was Thamel saying that Barnes would get the start versus Florida.
All I can say to this news is no thanks.
Are you sure you’re not reading the report from the Florida game?
Source: Utah is expected to start Bryson Barnes at quarterback against Cal today. Nate Johnson is expected to play again as a change-of-pace quarterback, the same way Utah began the season.

I am pretty bad with names. But who the hell is thammel?
SMH WHY
Well, if this is true, I guess this is the way that Utah is going to roll, barring injuries, at the QB position for the rest of the year. I’m guessing that the coaching staff has made the calculation that’s the best way to get the most offense from the team. I can imagine Barnes getting Utah inside the Red Zone and them then switching to Johnson because of his elusiveness.
I look forward to watching the QB hold onto the ball for too long and then scramble for no gain.
Rough.
This two QB system doesn’t leave me optimistic
Literally me right now:
I thought Barnes broke his ribs? Quick recovery?
There’s no way someone could recover from broken ribs that fast. Maybe it was just a bruised sternum. With Utah, you never really know.
West coast hospital doctor in Corvallis: this is serious.
Utah training staff: Give it a week.
I’m not even upset about this because the two P5 games Nate has started we have scored 14 total points. Might as well see if Barnes and Nate works again like it did with Florida.
Barnes is undefeated as a starter.
Newman saying Barnes took 1st team reps this week
We’ll also see a new Center today plus 4-5 of who been out..
Is Maea finally back? Or is Kump out and someone else playing Center?
Kump backing up both guard spots. Faaiu gets the start at center.
Jackson? Because he is the biggest impact. He is worth at least 100 yards and potentially 10 points.
Well, Jackson is supposed to play as per Whitt in recent interviews. Let’s hope that he can play a full game and not just spots here and there…
If Becker and JJ (at near full-strength) are back, that’d be huge!
Sounds like things are off the rails.
