ParticipantLone Peak & Corner Canyon put on an absolute show tonight at RES. Lone Peak came away with a 49-42 victory. In a repeat of last year’s title bout, version 2021 was a heavyweight slugfest and instant UHSAA classic. This was Lone Peak’s second victory over their region rival this season as they dashed Corner Canyon’s 48-game, 3 year win streak back in an October rout.
The evolution of HS football since the early 2000s has been impressive. A lot of D1 kids on the field tonight including: CC, USC QB commit Devin Brown, Oregon LB commit Harrison Taggart, BYU WR commit Cody Hagen (who I think is a great pick up for them – I thought he would head to Stanford). Lone Peak WR Luke Hyde is a Utah prospect (I believe) and they have a great OL Joe Brown who is headed to Virginia. For quite a few years now, the center of power for Utah HS football really seems to be concentrated in Draper and North Utah County (Lehi won the 5A championship earlier today).
Here’s a clip of LP’s game clinching TD. This McChesney kid from LP had 3 catches for TD tonight. The last one happened right in front of where I was sitting and I think the adrenaline and emotion got to him because he blacked out as he headed to the sideline. They gave him some smelling salts and he bounced right up lol.

ParticipantSo what’s the deal? Are high school kids recruited to go to certain schools now?

Participantreligious high schools have always recruited: Mater Dei, St. Johns Bosco, De La Salle.,, I don’t know if the schools mentioned fit that category. Corner Canyon’s last two QB’s were transfers so it could just be parents willing to move to get their kids the best coaching and exposure.

Participant“Unfair recruiting” claims have always followed the top teams. This was true with Skyline in the 90s, with Timpview and Bingham in the 2000s and as of late with Corner Canyon. In Corner Canyon’s case, they’ve had some high profile move-ins that people like to criticize.
I live in Lone Peak boundaries and their kids are all local. Maybe it’s a numbers game? I don’t feel like people eat, sleep, breathe football in this area, but Utah County and particularly North Utah County (plus Corner Canyon to make up 6A Region 4) have completely dominated 6A and 5A football in the last 4-5 years. The coaching with these teams seems quite good. A lot of good D1 players have come out of this area. I do see much more parental investment in athletic development and training of children happening than when I was in HS in the late 90s. That certainly has a lot to do with it IMO.

ParticipantNow that you mention it, when I was playing for Granger High School back in the 90’s, Skyline recruited Fahu Tahi pretty hard to come play for them. Obviously, he didn’t. I also remember Reno Mahe playing for Brighton while living in Kearns High boundaries.

ParticipantIIRC, Granite School District had open boundaries and Skyline definitely benefited during Dupaix’s golden years.

ParticipantThey did. Brighton was in Jordon so I don’t know how Mahe went from a Granite school to a Jordan school. When I was in school, our center lived in Granite Hich School’s boundaries. He came to Granger with hopes of getting a scholarship. He was super good and received a ton of letters his junior year, but he injured his knee and couldn’t get it right.
