Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark doubled down on the conference’s preferred College Football Playoff model

What caught my eye were his comments regarding the College Sports Commission, which will regulate revenue-sharing and NIL. Specifically this tidbit:

One of the primary goals of CSC is to change the market from pay for play to a market of true third-party NIL. The CSC’s enforcement of punitive measures towards those who break the rules will change behavior in college athletics.

I will believe it when I see it.

They have to do something….if they don’t, college sports is going to go the way of the dodo. I’m giving it one more season to see what develops before I pull the plug on my “in person” fandom and start devoting my entertainment dollars solely to traveling and the Utah Mammoth.

I’m with you. I can’t go in person anymore since the Utes left the PAC 12 but I might quit watching college football altogether.

I agree they need to do something, but I have zero faith they actually will do anything of any consequence.

Then, for large swathes of the country, they will go the way of the WFL or USFL.

I’m not convinced that there is a lot of risk to the system. The haves are pretty content. They are getting the best players, big money, and have a fun playoff. Further, the playoff was a lot of fun to watch even though my team was not involved.

The reason we are have nots is due to our numbers. The system can afford less interest from Utah fans- otherwise we would be in the P2.

I am with you in terms of losing interest though. I don’t have much of an emotional tie to professional athletes coming and going moment by moment who happen to wear the uniform of my alma mater. The more Cam Calhoun types and the less Lander Barton types- the less I’m interested.

I’ve always enjoyed watching the prospects join our team as high-school kids, develop and progress over 4 years. The hope for future success has always been a big part of the equation for me. If it becomes who accepts our middling payment for 8 months and then searches elsewhere for a somewhat better payment- that is normal people looking for a better job. Perfectly acceptable, but not entertaining.

I’d support the university going back to being about education, particularly if that meant lowering cost to the non-athlete students. Even if Utah dumps football altogether, Georgia and Ohio State will still do their thing (and I’ll probably watch the playoff).

There are people like you and there are people like me in the college football environment. I watch college sports because I have an emotional tie to a couple of schools by virtue of my attendance in those schools.

If either, or both, of those schools are relegated to also ran status or drop sports altogether, then I’m not going to transfer my dollars and eyeballs to another school in the P2. In fact, I’ll just focus more intensely on those professional sports that draw my interest and draw down completely on anything related to college sports.

As I’ve said many times in this forum, college sports big problem is that it’s regional, while professional sports are national. In addition, when you really do a deep dive on college sports, you realize that the talent level is below anything any minor league produces and it really gets by off fans’ emotional ties to the school rather than the actual proficiency of the athletes involved.

Agreed. I am already sort of checked out. It’s just not as enjoyable as it used to be. If there’s a P2 without us being involved, I’ll spend my time doing other things.

They will try to do something but then a State will pass a law prohibiting any regulation or a player will sue and the same thing will happen. The NCAA needs antitrust protection from Congress.
