For all those who are (rightly) fed up with NIL, the portal, and all the outside money ruining college sports, can I make a suggestion?
Start following one or more of the Olympic sports.
1. No NIL money, just scholarships. The way it used to be in football/basketball.
2. There’s a portal, but it’s being used for the right reasons. Not just to…[Read more] -

And why is Auburn letting him get away?
What say would Auburn have in the matter? In today’s college sports, the athletes have 100% control. If he wants to leave, he wants to leave. Maybe he wants to be a starter somewhere, not the third guy off the bench. Maybe he wants a different role. Maybe he doesn’t like the system of play. Maybe he…[Read more]

I would also like to include the players’ position coaches as well.
If we include position coaches, we might as well just keep it a free-for-all like it is today, because position coaches are always moving around.
Also, this would be a very football-specific rule. It seems like football teams have more layers of management than Goldman S…[Read more]

What if the head coach IS the reason you want to transfer?
Then you shouldn’t have signed up to play for the guy. Decisions have consequences.
That’s why I support student athletes being able to transfer IF their HC leaves or is fired. Because the program is no longer what the kid signed up for. Can’t fault a kid for that. But if the player…[Read more]

Simple solution: You can’t enter the portal unless your team’s head coach quits/gets fired.

4-star freshman transfer from Auburn is a Ute. Whoa!

If banning people is a tool to be used sparingly (which I agree with, btw), can we maybe create a “Questionable Posts” category and move things like this there?

Yeah, the commentators were definitely sucking off UCLA. As the final scores were going up, all commentary and cameras were on UCLA…all the while I’m thinking “who just won the meet?” But I get it – UCLA is a much bigger brand than Utah. That’s what ESPN is now: A brand-pumping sports whore.
Turning attention back to the actual sport: For the…[Read more]

If you’re needing some fun Utes content in your life right about now, I’m here for you.
Every year the Utah ski team does an event called Skimeister. This is where the alpine skiers don XC gear, the XC skiers strap into alpine gear, and they have a big race. Super fun…and super funny. (For those who don’t ski, alpine and XC skiing is completely…[Read more]

Yeah, that’s huge downside of the NIL era. It’s very rare to get to watch a player grow and develop at your school, which for me was one of the most rewarding things about college sports.
And while it sucks that Utah starts developing players just for someone with deeper pockets to swoop in and carry them off, let’s recognize that it cuts both…[Read more]

Love this pickup! There’s definitely a certain identity being created if you look at the 7 guys we’ve gotten so far.

Great post! Can you shed any light on what’s going on on the basketball recruiting front? I knew our NIL purse had grown significantly, but it’s nice to see a number. So can you tell me anything about how and when we might see it applied?

As one of those ALUFs – as they like to call my kind – I have never once felt awkward about supporting Utah or disliking BYU-Provo Campus. The distinction between belief and school affiliation is very black and white in my mind.

Andre Miller was my next door neighbor in the old Austin Hall when we were both freshmen. I have so many memories of him.
Across the hall was Chris Fuamatu Ma’afala’s room. Andre and Chris used to go outside and shoot baskets together on the outdoor court that was just outside the building. When the weather was nice, I would open the window to…[Read more]

If Lovering goes to the portal, I calculate his chances of finding a D1 suitor to be 42%. In other words, slightly higher than his free throw shooting percentage.
Moving on, I’m looking forward to seeing what Jensen can do on the recruiting trail.

If this in indeed true…
Of all the questionable decisions Smith made or was rumored to make, this would be by far the worst. You have a university legend of an ex-player, all-American, longtime NBA player, experienced pro coach who calls you and wants to work on your staff as a VOLUNTEER…and you say no!?
If you make decisions that bad, stay…[Read more]

The fact that Utah has an arena-based team that outdraws our men’s basketball team makes us different than 99% of the other universities out there, and certainly has to be a factor in the design of the next arena.
