      Nooga,

I’m not comparing Whitt to anybody nor putting him down. I’m just saying there have been a number of coaches at Utah who have left their mark, and frankly, in their own respective eras I believe could claim to have made as significant a contribution or more-so than Kyle. Whitt kept Utah football in the conversation. A few championships but mostly middle of the pack stuff for 25 years. That’s a lot of time. Not lighting the place on fire but I’ll take it as a win.

Just for the record and historically, look a number of other highly thought of Utah coaches …. Ike Armstrong 1925-49. 25 seasons and 13 conference championships. Now, that’s a Wow performance! Or, Jack Curtis, 1950-57. Four (4) championship in 8 seasons. .500 batting average. Again, obviously, a different time. But, still impressive coaching talent and championship results with ‘the material’ they had to work with.
And since you’re not wanting to compare apples and oranges, I won’t throw Urban’s stats out there.

In a similar vein, O’Toole as an UDFA played well for Seattle.

And so far, so is Junior Tafuna also an UDFA for Houston.

I hate that one. Also, I hate when either party gets a supposed win over the other and they start describing their feelings in food terms, such as “delicious”. If we beat BYU by 100 points, I will be ok with that word, otherwise, bleh!

McBride established the culture and poly pipeline. Urban brought discipline and a winning attitude. Whitt built off the two and ushered in the Pac12 era. He has established a solid program and his player development has been amazing. Until Urban showed up Utah football was not even on the map. As a long time fan it’s been an amazing ride. Whitt has put us in the national spotlight and done an amazing job in my opinion. Scalley is the perfect guy to put his stamp on the program next.

Sans Coach RM, we don’t have what we have today.

        He deserves a statue IMO.

I wish Snoop would get a spot. But potential will win out the decision.

I, for one, can’t wait for the first 3-and-out under Scalley when our fans boo the team off the field. Us Utah fans aren’t exactly known for playing the long game when it comes to our teams’ performances.

I think that’s the multiplier, is that Witt has done it while almost always being at a resource and spotlight disadvantage to his competition. Consistently outperforming expectations is the mark of a good coach, and I think he’s consistently done that. Consistently identified and developed talent that maybe others have missed and got us competitive with big time programs in the pac 12 probably a decade before most expected. The AZ schools have more resources, and how well have they done in football since they joined the pac?

He’s not a perfect coach, but he might have been the perfect coach for the time and place. Who else would have hung around Utah so long before parlaying any success or reputation into a bigger pay day? Very few other coaches can match his consistency over such a long period while staying loyal.

He very well might not be the perfect coach for the rapidly changing landscape of modern college football, but that’s to be seen. I hope the last two years were just an anomaly, not a trend, and he can go out on a high note with another conference title in yet another conference.
