Is the portal sustainable as it currently stands? No. Every player essentially becoming a free agent every year, each of which is chasing an NIL deal is not sustainable.

Could changes be made that could make it sustainable? Absolutely. Multi year contracts would be a huge step forward. Changing rules about the timing of the portal and when NIL deals can be signed would also likely help. Lots of things can be done to fix this mess.

Will changes be made? Hard to say. Unfortunately, NCAA leadership gives me little faith they will solve this problem, and without a strong central governing body, it might be hard to accomplish.

It’s wild to me that we will essentially be an entirely new team next year. I trust in Alex and am hopeful he’s getting the guys he wants to be able to complete his vision.

But I wonder how much of it is Alex telling old team members they need to move on, versus old team members trying to chase greener pastures.

The fact that the name is “Phil Mecrevis” (aka fill my crevice) tells you this dude is a troll.

The question of the day is it a Ute fan trying to stir up BYU hate, or is it a BYU fan just being a BYU fan…

Either way, while I normally try to preach tolerance of our wayward brothers to the south, the fact that I know that sentiments like these are real among BYU fans reminds me of just why it is so many people (myself included) love to see BYU lose.

I’m with Proud Ute on this. Maybe next year will be great, but honestly maybe it will be terrible. There are a lot of unknowns on this team right now. I hope we will win 6-8 games next year, and anything above that will be exceeding my expectations. If we can’t get to 6 wins again, while I will be sad, I won’t be shocked either.

Interesting points. But as they say “you can’t teach height”: the reality is the dude is an athlete, and hopefully Alex can help him with everything else (although if you are right, Alex could have his hands full).

      This is interesting.

I don’t really have a feel for this, but with only 6 spots on the roster officially filled and 9 spots still unfilled: are we behind where we should be? And is there any reason we should be worried our roster isn’t more complete at this time point? (And sorry, when I started typing this I hadn’t seen proudutes comment)

I thought Clark Gilbert would have learned from when he said BYU wouldn’t pay to play…

While I see nothing wrong with BYU playing the same NIL game that everyone else is, pretending that you aren’t playing the game when you in fact are is such a stupid stance.

As a middle aged father that loves a good lawn, I actually kind of wish that Utah did this.

That said, what’s funny is if you go to the BYU website you find this: “BYU consistently ranks among the top five schools in this competition, having won six national titles in the last seven years.”

But then when you go to the actual organizations web page, you realize it’s only about 50 colleges competing, in which a surprisingly high number of them are community colleges

Lest we become too much like the team down south, I think we should pump the brakes on criticizing BYU basketball.

They are objectively in a much better place than Utah basketball is right now, and arguably also have a brighter future too. Money trumps almost everything in the current college landscape, and right now their B-Ball team has far more financial support than Utah. (Which has bought them Kevin Young who I expect to be a very good coach, has landed them the top recruit next year, and I’m sure will continue to bring in more players in the future.)

While I am very hopeful that Alex Jensen will return the Utes to greatness, for him to make Utah better than BYU will require him to do more with less (which I think is possible, but is far from guaranteed).

It looks like there is still a lot of Ute players from last year in the portal that don’t have a new home. Do we think some of them will come back?
