Love for Ludwig Offense

  Just re-watching some games from last year and looking at the offense in the WSU game and I just love it. It’s unique but simple and keeps the defense guessing.
  
  I want Ludwig for the long-haul. I just can’t help but be impressed with some of his play-calls last year. Tight-end screens, reverses, multiple motions, designed passes to the RB, counters, etc. but also with dashes of powers, curls, and options. He’s got several complicated plays but others where the defense blocks themselves out of the play entirely because the play is designed to capitalize on a defender that makes the correct read. Just beautiful.
  
  I love it. He’s making options for us to maximize.
  
  At the same time, I just am watching Ty Jordan and feel so grateful to have seen that kind of a season for a great yound man. Really proud of him. May he RIP.

  Really? I have been lead to believe from UteHub and other fan sources that Utah will never sign a decent receiver ever and all of the recievers on the roster want to transfer because the Utes don’t throw the ball 80% of the time like all the other “championship” air-raid teams.

    What really cracks me up are all of those that beckon the days of Urban Meyer’s offense because they thought he threw a lot. I must have been sleeping those two years. I like Andy’s offense but just sometimes not the strange calls he makes at the goal line or 4th and short situations. It was a problem the first go around and he still makes the same bonehead decisions. I remember one game way back in Andy’s first go around where he called a double reverse on the damn goal line! I remember looking up to the press box after the play and screaming at him. I’m sure he couldn’t hear me but it made me feel good.
    
    I am hoping the Utes can just bottle that second half vs. WSU and play that way next season on every snap. If they can, it could be one special year with the talent and coaching we have coming back!

      Totally agree. Explaining that Urbans offense was 55/45 run pass hurts feelings. When you break down the film and see that 20% of those passes were slip screens and shovel passes that were defacto runs it looks even worse. When Urban openly talks about the perfect game being 250 rush, 250 pass, with no turnovers it seems to fall on deaf ears.
      
      Consistently running the football and having a pass efficiency hovering near 70% is how you win football games. The mature Ludwig offense does that.

  I do often see very good play design by Andy and feel on balance he is very good for us. I sometimes thought he called plays not so much because they are just what you do in a situation but instead because it may not be expected. I used this as an explanation when he would run two very similar plays in a row. Next, it hurts me to say this but I think Andy would get better if he studied Sark’s plays at Alabama. Sark was a master at giving an over prusing defense a direction to go before going somewhere else. Sark’s use of motion to create misdirection was simply another level. I would like to see Andy copy some of that to find our TEs completly uncovered.

    Apparently not the offensive line blocking. In 2015 and 2016 the o-line was mauling people and the play calling still “sucked”. haha Personally, I am stoked to see the current crop of youngsters grow. They improved a ton in 5 games after makeshift off season, can’t wait to see what another year of maturation and a true off season program next year.

  My favorite play from last year was one of Ty Jordan’s TD runs, I think against Wazzu, when he basically juked a LB and then a DB for about a 15 yard run or so, that was an amazing run.
  
  The only thing that concerns me about our offense, and I think it’s more of a QB problem than coaching, is that we aren’t using the WR enough. We have some good talent and I’d hate to see it wasted or transferred.

  I feel he’s really grown since he was with the utes last. The only real head scratchers are some play calls in the red zone. He can’t make the throws on the field though. I just think of Bentley missing those wide open fades in the EZ and just have to sigh.

  He is by far the best offensive coordinator we’ve had (not including norm). His play calling isn’t perfect, but the failures are usually due to player error.
