Here’s my list starting back from Spring Ball: RJ Hubert, T-Boney (Tyrone Young-Smith), Jatravis Broughton, Fabian Marks, Zemaiah Vaughn, Brandon McKinney (was he out or just behind Vonte Davis?), Lacarea Pleasant-Johnson, Aaron Lowe RIP.

Utah’s two deep for the rose bowl consisted of Elisha Lloyd true freshman who hasn’t even seen a play on special teams and Cain Savage true freshman who has never played a down on defense, but has played special teams. And these were the guys we were going to roll out against Ohio State? Yikes. I’m not knocking them, I just mean to say that’s a hell of a time to get your first start?

It’s also a helluva time to make your RB3 play corner the whole game while also playing significant reps on offense.

I think Bernard played (and this is totally just a guess on my part) because the younger CBs were not physically ready to compete with elite level WRs. I’m thinking that the coaches liked the fact that Bernard at least had the ability to match OSU WR’s physicality and their athleticism to an extent. The young CBs on the team are severely laking in the strength department, which would have created it’s own set of issues. Not to mention the fact that Bernard has already proven that he has what it takes mentally to play in games and make big plays.

Savage got the reps in the CCG after Vaughn went down. He and Rawls are technically 2nd year true freshman so they’ve been through multiple camps. Makes me wonder if the time the two spent on the receiver side during spring/fall camp (not sure if it was both or just one camp) slowed their development.

Mataele may have more experience at nickel but, per Shah, he is trained in both nickel and outside. Bishop has taken over McKinney’s starting spot but again, per Shah, our safeties are training in both safety and nickel. Putting your most experienced DB lineup out there would have been Mataele/Phillips at corner, McKinney at nickel, and Bishop/Davis at safety.

Ultimately, the problem was not the DB rotation. Could they have played better? Sure, no one ever plays a perfect game. However, the real issue was the inability of the DLine to get any pressure on Stroud and take him out of his comfort zone. NFL DB’s can’t cover for 5-6 seconds and since Stroud is just punching his time before he is eligible for his first round draft slot, that was always going to a struggle. Even 5 Clark Phillips’s would have had trouble with those timing and crossing routes.

The number of times Stroud put the ball right where only his receiver had a chance was impressive. The first TD to Harrison, there was nothing Bernard could do. The last TD to Smith-Njiba, Mataele was in perfect position. Sometimes you tip your cap to the other guy and accept that he was just better on that day.

LPJ was in uniform, not sure why he wasn’t playing. (saw several shots of #31 on the sideline)

McKinney was in for a few plays as safety but maybe has no corner experience? Not sure.

Even saw Young-Smith in a shot after the game, had a jersey on but not sure if he ‘dressed’ or not.

Either way, we knew our depleted secondary was gonna struggle. Was a good game though. Phillips did everything he could, so did the rest of the guys.

Thanks for the insight. Did Vonte Davis look slow or did the Ohio State receivers just look that fast?

Both, to an extent, early game Davis is amazing, probably a top safety in the PAC, but the 2nd half he really slows down, we’ve noticed a trend over the season which is why Bishop has had so much time on the field lately.

Can’t fault the kid though, from what I understand he deals with some intense diabetic/medical issues so I don’t know if he can physically play a full 60-80 defensive posessions.

LPJ is weird because I would think he would be ahead of Lloyd, LPJ has at least played special teams and made game tackles.
