In a matter two years, with the rapid emergence of NIL, Rising may make in 2023 through NIL close to what Huntley made in 2022 as a third year NFL QB. Huntley is a free agent after this season so should get a solid contract bump with a new team if his agent takes care of business.

Rising will spend most of 2023 making commercials, spinning donuts in KWs truck, rehabbing whatever knee injury he is recovering from pulling in a ton of cash. Good on him, he’s earned it. I know there’s more to it all with NFL benes, endorsements, etc. It’s been fun watching it all play out and good on these kids jumping in on the cash grab. It ain’t gonna last as soon as the NFL steps in.

Can you clarify what you mean by this statement?: It ain’t gonna last as soon as the NFL steps in.
As far as I know, the NFL has zero regulatory authority.

Probably speculating that the NFL will start letting teams sign kids earlier if they are cashing in anyway.

But isn’t that exactly what the NFL and NFLPA don’t want? They already went to court, and won, to stop underclassmen from forcing their way into the NFL (i.e. Maurice Clarett from tOSU). I would think that both the NFL and NFLPA would approve of the current college system. I mean, the only players you see returning are marginal types like Rising, Nix, and Penix. The surefire 1st and 2nd rounders leave at the earliest opportunity. We’ve seen that here with Kincaid and CP3.

This is great for the NFL. All us outsiders talk about age, but the NFL doesn’t care. They want ready to play players. Now a scout/GM looks at Rising and sees potential but also sees that they aren’t ready. Now they get another year of tape.

Look at Huntley. He goes undrafted. The next year Zach Wilson went #2. Had Huntley been able to go back to school for another year (and under the new RS rules, he would have), he would have been a 1-3 round pick. The NFL would have much rather had him play another year in college and develop more and then come out then being on the practice squad for a year.

And as far as Huntley as a FA, let’s hope he ends up in Seattle. He would be perfect for Pete Carroll. Look at what he did with a rookie Wilson and with Geno Smith. Huntley would be cheap and fit the system perfectly.

I don’t think Geno Smith is going anywhere. I’m already hearing rumors of a 3-year x $25M contract being worked up. Given that Seattle has kind of built its offense around him and it’s the place where he’s experienced the most success in his career and where he’s most comfortable, he’d be negligent not to take it.

Regarding the NFL getting involved with NCAA football, my take is similar to yours. As long as there’s an uninterrupted pipeline of players coming in, they don’t care at all what type of ecosystem is present in college football. Unlike the NBA, they’d rather have more physically and mentally mature individuals in the league. That, and the fact that football is an inherently more complicated sport than basketball…it’s almost impossible to believe that a player one year removed from high school would be ready for the NFL.
