Seems a little small, but you can’t argue with his results last year. With a better O-line and potentially more talent around him (potentially is the key word here), you’d hope he’d continue to grow as a passer and rely less on his legs. I think 3k yards passing at a 60-65% clip and 500 running puts him right on par with the QB that won two P12…[Read more]

  • Thanks, Jim. Nice post.

From time to time, I need to sit back and realize how blessed I am. This past football season was painful for me. But I hurt for those people in the hills of North Carolina who lost so much in the hurricane, and now snow and bad weather.

  • All true Utah. The one exception is most colleges are public institutions. They are there to provide our kids with an education and life changing experience. College sports provide scholarships and activities for students. Alumni and fans buy tickets and gear to support the sports programs and the university. How many professors make 1-8 million a…[Read more]

I’m sure it helps that we have his coach and they seemed to succeed from each other, but we’ll still need to offer some major NIL money, especially if the demand for him is such as it seems to be. We are not guaranteed to get him by any means.

It is really hard to not overlook his rushing numbers. I also think UNM did no favors to Dampier. I think it partially explains the TD/INT ratio.

  • Replaceable. Calhoun still has a lot of work to do to be NFL ready. Basically signed up for the Utah DB training camp and bailed for the bag. Until there’s contracts, programs at different levels are the training ground for Billionaire programs. The these are “just kids” nonsense needs to stop. KW and the other whiney, overpaid coaches compl…[Read more]

At this point, any QB we can get on the roster would be a positive.

  • It’s everywhere. Not just college sports. Look at the buildings being built by the LDS corp. Hundreds of billions of dollars they’ve hoarded. Look at the president (old and new) and the politicians around them and the money they’ve amassed.

Look at how huge these corps have gotten: Amazon, Walmart, Disney, etc.

This is our world now, and until…[Read more]

  • The guy was reasonably successful in his first year running Beck’s offense. Maybe we get some other hot-shot QB in the portal. Maybe we don’t. I would feel pretty good either way if we have Dampier on the roster. This is the closest we could possibly get at this point to continuity on the offensive side of the ball (in a good way, anyway).…[Read more]

  • As Employees the University would have to provide employment protection, manage things through HR, pay taxes, workers comp and be far more responsible for actions and insuring payment etc.

Under NIL someone outside with little or no controls is handing over money.

If they were employees there would be an entirely different set of rules around…[Read more]

  • Can someone explain how or if NIL will be different once these players (in all sports) become employees of the University? Doesn’t that mean they will then become paid by the school they attend and with that, can they still take NIL funds coming from booster or can they only receive payment from the school?

    Or does this even matter?

  • That’s what it eventually will be, but it’s not possible right now because the players have no power or say. The courts will never enforce such contracts (hence why the restrictions on transferring were killed by the courts) because the players are not represented or “fairly compensated”. So the only way for that to happen is that the players…[Read more]

  • “This isn’t professional sports”

It’s unregulated for profit entertainment for a country that has lost all sense of priority.

Teachers, nurses, firemen, can’t rent a condo in Salt Lake City without a roommate. Homelessness is increasing rapidly (though the state denies it).

  • It’s Ryan smith and byu recruiting him.

They are actively recruiting Utah’s best players.

Smith Snowden has been offered by byu. The Fano brothers have both been offered by BYU

They are willing to over pay to get good players and destroy Utah at the same time.

  • the solution is inevitable.

They need to be classified as employees.

Then there will little reason or incentive for many schools to participate.

big $$ will be spun off and Universities will lease their sites to outside interests (sometimes) that will own these semi-pro teams…

  • Jim, Sadly you are too right. I was explaining NIL to my kid last night, that a 17 year old kid is going to be making $7million dollars to play at BYU. I pondered my role though small and insignificant as a fan and supporter. As long as we keep filling the seats and buying the merchandise nothing will change. As a parent if my kids could earn a…[Read more]

58 players threw for at least 2,500 pass yards in ‘24. 36 players ran for at least 1,000 yards in ‘24. Only 1 player did. Dampier. 2,768 pass yds, 1,166 rush yds 31 total TDs. Beck is a great QB coach. This will be their 2nd year together. So I expect a lot of improvement in his throw game.

  • It’s also bad business move. We all know Utah develops DBs as good as any anyone. He’d make ten times the bag being thrown at him with the nfl contract he’ll get with the development from Shaw and Scalley. shortsighted decision

  • This is the problem with Utah. We don’t have any big boosters now that can compete with all the other money being thrown around. The only way BYU would be able to double the offer (and I’m not saying they doubled it) would be them getting backing from those that are funding their bball team.

And we won’t be able to compete with any of the other…[Read more]
