  • I don’t think he’s in the driver seat for the next MBB HC hire. I hear it’s the university president and a few top donors that are going to decide and make the next hire. I think Harlan’s days are numbered and he is not trusted by a lot of the alumni. His post game comments after the BYU football game left a sour taste in the mouth of alum and…[Read more]

  • I think Harlan better be in complete control of finding and hiring the new MBB coach, because his job may depend on it. He has not shown a great ability to evaluate and hire coaches for Ute athletics so far.

If he doesn’t hit a home run with this hire, then we are in for another 5 years of mediocre MBB. I would fire him if we aren’t competive…[Read more]

  • I don’t think you fire a coach before the season ends unless you have a replacement committed. Doesn’t make sense to eat two years of salary if you can’t get one of the big three to commit. Unless you can get Jensen Miller or Bryant your just rolling the dice again.

  • I assumed the deal was essentially done behind closed doors. If so, why don’t we know anything yet? Is the delay a sign that Alex may not be wrapped up? I was hoping we would not have to get down to our 4th or 5th choice.

What say you? Is this typical? Is the delay an actual delay or merely my paying attention and wanting to know what will happen?

  • In 2020 we had our old shingles removed, a bit of patching and a new asphalt roof put on our 3,500 sq ft house with a fairly complex roofline. Supposedly heavy weight Corning shingles (25 year warranty?) The vents were changed to the type that vent along the whole apex.

IWC Intermountain West Contractors charged $14,850. They came with a whole…[Read more]

  • You’re looking purely at results and using that as a metric as to why one guy is a better X’s and O’s coach yet ignoring the absolute fact that Larry was a far superior recruiter. There are many bad coaches in basketball in general that are fortunate enough to have a good roster which overshadows how truly bad they are. There are also good…[Read more]

  • Well, he’s a local kid of sorts, so I do hope he stays once the season is over. I can see some similarities with Kuzma but he’s nowhere the ball handler that Kuzma was.

That is your opinion. The actual results say otherwise. That is my point. You are basically saying that if Smith was a better recruiter he would have better results. Recruiting is a HUGE part of coaching success in college basketball so Smith had a glaring weakness that contributed to his lack of success. Hypotheticals do not win games.…[Read more]

$5M is what his buyout is…probably $4M after taxes though.

  • Disagree. I don’t think you can take winning statistics as the be all end all. Coach K was able to recruit talent that Smith couldn’t. I don’t think this is debatable. This is where opinion comes in. I think Smith got more out of the talent he had to work with than Larry did. I do think he was a better X’s and O’s guy.

    Neither coach is…[Read more]

He left the Aggies in a bind. They don’t want him either. He inherited Sam Merrill who plays a lot for the cavaliers and the center that plays for the Celtics. Inheriting two NBA players in the MW will get you to the dance. He has never recruited an NBA caliber player. Maybe one of the Dakota colleges will take him back. He has 4 million coming s…[Read more]

  • Uh, not so fast…

You know what changed? Keanu played 26 minutes which was the most he’s played all season. What did he do with that opportunity? 6 of 8 shooting (75%) including 1 of 2 from 3pt; 100% from the ft line 5 for 5; 10 rebounds including 2 offensive; 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 18 points. Game Score of 18.2 (almost double the…[Read more]

Yep, to me this is the reason why his firing is justified. He disrespected a Utah legend who was only trying to reach out and help make Smith successful.

The way he handled that was absolutely inexcusable.

That honestly pissed me off when I heard Grant say that.

  • I think if you compare the programs of Boylen Larry K etc. you can see a common thread of pride in something more. Utah may not always have the best in the nation talent. But many times you have talent that can elevate itself through coaching and a core message.

Majerus with all of his quirks he had a program that inspired pride in players.…[Read more]

I’m sorry but results are the only stats I care about and if you take away the absolutely dreadful team that Larry inherited from Boylen his first year, Larry’s winning towers over Smith. If winning isn’t the measure than what the hell is? Nerdy, David Locke-esq made up ratios? In college, I look at winning, graduation rates, elevation of…[Read more]

He could have gone anywhere except BYU and Utah and still be a Saint in Logan. But he pretty much left them in the middle of the night and put a very bad taste in some of their mouths. He’s “persona non grata” up north.

You never know…Utah State has lost their head coach at the end of the previous two seasons. Right now, they stand at 24-5, even after last night’s blowout loss to Boise State, with another NCAA trip in their future. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Jerrod Calhoun hired away this offseason and Smith make a return trip to Logan. Remember, you…[Read more]

Yep…that’s his niche. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he ends up somewhere like the Missouri Valley Conference and does well.

Personally, I can see Smith getting picked up by a G5 team and once again having success, to include return trips to the NCAAs. He just doesn’t have what it takes to be a consistent winner at a P4 program.

  • I was being ironic for the most part. I noticed a few people on the site, after Smith got fired, saying words to the effect of “watch the team play better now.” Not gonna happen…and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Utah lose every game remaining on their schedule.
