If I had to guess, it’s probably both. Whitt’s offense seems to play to the players strengths, but not at the cost of risking turnovers or negative plays. I remember going from almost never having a fullback in 2021 to Logan Kendall committing padded homicide in 2022. I’d be interested in seeing how the offense changed from just one year to the next where we went from Booker to Williams, Wilson to Williams, etc.

Yeah, I think personnel was transformative.

Whether it was Rising getting us into the right play at LOS or his making a play with his legs when plays broke down or TT’s elite vision it transformed Whitt and Ludwig’s predictability and conservatism into something more.

Do we really believe that in 2021-2022 Whitt and Ludwig schemed and playcalled that high red zone success rate when for years prior and since it was pretty mediocre? Or could it have been Rising, TT, Oline et al made the same old scheme and plays hum.

He started college in 2021, didn’t redshirt during any season, and because of that, he’s not eligible for any Covid-19 extension. It’s the same issue with a guy like Lawson Lovering in the MBB.

Guillory is the highest rated recruit of the 2 FR, had multiple blue chip offers.

I put zero stock in the MW transfers. Why do we think backups from NM and UNLV will be more than backups on a P4 team?

The backups we need are RB1’s in waiting that can replace starter productivity. In 2021-2022 we had 3 of these guys. Not JAG to carry the ball for 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

QB: B … Dampier is solid but needs to improve consistency throwing the ball. The backups are up in the air … Nate Johnson is playing receiver, but he’s a good security blanket for the group.

RB: B+ to A- … The backs are performing well right now. Solid all around group. Arguably our best running back room since 2021.

WR/TE: C+ to B- … Z Williams, Whittemore, and Zipperer are going to be very good players. Tia is also someone to pay attention too. Still waiting on Singer news from NCAA. Hunter Andrews might be a star in the making at TE.

OL: A+ … Nasty group in a good way!

DEFENSE: Not worried … early during install the O had their way with the D but the D’s adjusted to Becks offense. Solid group all around! They’ll add 1-2 guys on the DL post spring. Best linebacking group in the conference. Shemwell and Stokes are guys to pay attention to at corner.

SPECIAL TEAMS: This group will take a step forward. We have a kicker who can bang it through the end zone on kickoffs. That alone will improve us.

OVERALL: I really like the team Utahs assembled. Backup QB is probably my greatest concern (PTSD From last few years) … I do think Utahs in an okay spot behind Dampier. Isaac will take a step forward being in his second year of college. Having Nate Johnson on the roster eases some anxiety’s too.

I’ll also add … I don’t think Utah has to be prolific throwing the football to be effective next year. I honestly believe if Dampier can cut down on turnovers, and just keep the D honest through the air we’re going to have a good team. I think Utah will have a top 25 rushing attack in CFB … Our O Line mixed with the rushers we have: Dampier, Parker (Other RB’s), Whittemore, Nate Johnson, H Andrews, and others will be solid. Utah just has to be effective enough through the air to keep teams honest.

This is the conclusion of year 3. Additionally, people talk about the success that he had in Boston but he only won 1 title (2008) while he was there from 2003-2021. He took a team that wasn’t making the playoffs (Boston made it in 4 of the prior 11 seasons) to making the playoffs (15 out of 18 seasons) but he was only able to win one title.

Additionally, people want to give him credit for the recent Celtics title because he drafted Tatum and Brown, but they were unable to get over the edge to a title until Brad Stevens made moves to get Porzingis and Holiday, crucial pieces to their title.

I think fans are losing patience because we have had three consecutive bottom dweller type seasons and there doesn’t seem to be light at the end of the tunnel. They keep saying that they are waiting for “the guy” to become available on the trade block, but how long are we going to sit and wait? I’m just not sold that they actually have a game plan. I think they’re waiting for something to fall into their lap, which just doesn’t happen very often (see the reaction to the Luka trade as an example).

For most of us, this opportunity seems like it should be a no brainer for Jensen – returning to his alma mater and being the top guy, one that fans and donors are yearning for.

I’m not saying he is reluctant to take the job, but the longer the process drags out, the more it’s possible that he isn’t sure about it.

He’s been in the coaching game a long time. What is it about being in the NBA that, to him, is so much better than being a college coach? NBA assistant or college head coach… it seems perfectly clear which is better. Yet, at least going back to the 2021 hiring search, Jensen doesn’t seem to see it that way.

It’s just puzzling to me why AJ doesn’t seem more interested or excited about the prospect of running the Utes program. We’ve never really even heard him even talk about it.

Again, I’m not saying he won’t take the job or that I have some inside info about him not taking the job. I’m just saying that up to the current date, he’s never really indicated any desire to coach at the college level, and seems to value assistant gigs in the NBA over HC gigs in college.

Doesn’t he understand that being successful as a college coach can still get him to the NBA as a head coach?

Just some random ramblings on my impressions of Mr Jensen up to the present date.

Isn’t Smith having the same transfer percentages? Or do his not count since they go to our biggest rival? Larry is not Majerus but he is the best basketball coach overall that we have had since Rick. If you say otherwise, you are just not being honest.

    Rick Majerus 1989-04 323–95
    Joe Cravens (acting) 1989–90 12–12
    Dick Hunsaker (acting) 2000–01 18–12
    Kerry Rupp (interim) 2004 9–4
    Ray Giacoletti 2005–07 54–40
    Jim Boylen 2007–11 69–60
    Larry Krystkowiak 2011–2021 137–96
    Craig Smith 2021–present 50-50

Larry inherited a MUCH bigger mess than any previous coach, had the highest winning percentage since Majerus (not going to count interims or actings because they were esentially Majerus teams). He produced more NBA draft picks, more all americans, more tournament results, etc. All in a much hard conference than even Majerus has to contend with. He was also a much better recruiter than everyone on this list post-Majerus. So bag on him all your want but the numbers simply do not support it.

    I think that’s a solid example.

To dig into the data a little more, here are Utah’s home attendance figures since Smith was hired in 2021:

    Season/Total Attendance/Avg Attendance/Conf Rank
    21-22: 118,351 / 7,397 (4th in P12)
    22-23: 114,047 / 6,709 (6th in P12)
    23-24: 140,431 / 8,777 (2nd in P12)
24-25: 117,145 / 7,810 (8th in XII) *There are four home games left

Here are the figures for Krystkoviak’s last three seasons (no attendance in 20-21 due to COVID):

    19-20: 137,852 / 10,561 (5th in P12)
    18-19: 170,897 / 11,393 (2nd in P12)
    17-18: 190,097 / 12,673 (2nd in P12)

To me, the numbers say we’d be able to fill a new 8,500-seat arena pretty consistently regardless of how well the team is playing. However, I recognize that it also lends some credibility to those who say a better product will bring more fans.

At the end of the day, I think you have to decide whether those extra 6,000 seats are worth having when the team is occasionally good, at the expense of the barren atmosphere when the team is not so good. Obviously for me, I would choose in favor of a vastly improved atmosphere and experience regardless of the team’s performance.
