ParticipantI love football, but college football is by far my favorite. I do not want an NFL team here because the Wasatch Front is not big enough to support two major college football teams and an NFL team. If an NFL team comes to Utah it will dilute the dollars going to our Utes. I don’t think that you can have 52,000 fans watching the Utes on Saturday and 65,000 fans selling out an NFL stadium on Sunday. The big corporations will put their money on the NFL team. We have seen that with the Jazz. So, as for me, “NFL – leave Utah alone.”
Go Utes!!!

BlockedClive Charles argued against re-instituting the Portland Timbers franchise in the early 00s for similar reasons.

ModeratorNFL. Utah. Sundays. Alcohol. I’ll believe it when I see it.

ParticipantIs this even being discussed?

ParticipantApparently, the NFL is talking about expanding to 40 teams. They generated a list of possible locations which included SLC.
-
Central Coast Ute
ParticipantThat’s a huge expansion. I don’t see it happening, at least not at that scale.

ParticipantWouldn’t Utah need to expand our stadium by at least another 10K? If so, I’m all for it!
GO EAGLES!!!

ParticipantGovernor Cox mentioned it in his presser yesterday. He said he would do everything in his power to get an NFL team here. I have worked with Spencer Cox and I like him a lot. But, I do not want an NFL team here.

ParticipantI get it. Like Utebacker said, I’m not sure Utah’s demographics will support an NFL team. It would be difficult to fill an NFL stadium on Sundays. And to your point, there will still be people going to Ute games so there’s no way they’ll go to an NFL teams games the following day. I just don’t see it working out.
Having said that, if the NFL were to expand to 40 teams, SLC makes sense. I can’t think of many other places. There’s St. Louis, San Antonio, Portland, OKC, and Toronto. Nothing else really comes to mind unless they go to London but that’s a ton of traveling. If they do go to 40 teams, Utah will probably be one.

BlockedI’d love to see Canadian cities added to the NFL, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Iqaluit…

ParticipantThe Bills played quite a few games in Toronto before the change in ownership and I think the stadium filled nicely. Canadians do follow American football a little too. Not as much as hockey, but they enjoy the sport so a city the size of Toronto should definitely be at the top of the list.

BlockedI don’t want a team in Toronto, far too close to Western New York.

ParticipantTuktoyuktuk seems like a good place.
Maybe Inuvik.

ParticipantI’d like to see Moosonee get a team. No roads into the town, can only get there by plane or train. I’m sure if you took a boat through the Hudson Bay you can there that way too. Maybe even by ice road in the winter.

ParticipantThere’s a 65,000 seat stadium in SLC? Will the predominant church in the state allow its members to attend games on Sunday? Unless you are the Green Bay Packers you need an owner. Who would own the franchise? The Miller family? Maybe the stadium could be built in Utah County and ownership financed in an MLM/Ponzi structure.
-
ProudUte
ParticipantGovernor Cox is a member of that church you mention and he is 100% behind it.
No, there is no 65,000 seat stadium. So, one would have to be built. Cox is against the state or the city paying for the stadium. I guess you could expand RES by 10,000 and the Utes and an NFL team could share the stadium like was done in LA and San Diego.
If we did build a new stadium, I would build it in southern SL county.

ParticipantWhere is Gov. Cox in the line of succession to prophet?

ParticipantI think he is 8. 🙂

BlockedI’d think a good name for the new team would be the Salt Lake City Prophets.

BlockedThe coaching list, player roster, and owner list could be fashioned to look like one of these.

ParticipantWhether it’s RES or a new stadium, need to be able to sell those $15 beers to be feasible.
(And not even during the Olympics where things got very relaxed elsewhere did they allow beer at Rice-Eccles)

BlockedPerhaps, the NFL would schedule SLC Prophets games on Saturday?

BlockedEach game day, helmets could be hand-painted with an image of a former or current prophet, seer, or revelator.
Go, Prophets!-
