(I refuse to call it Night with the Utes, it will always be Runnin’ Utes night). Surprised not to see any posts about the basketball team, but I guess that Tuttle thing is a pretty big story. Curious what people’s impressions are for those that attended. With the usual caveat that you can only tell so much from a scrimmage, Barefield, Vante Hendrix, and Both Gach jumped out at me the most. I’ve seen Gach compared to Delon Wright and while I’m not sure I’d go that far yet, my comment last night was he looked like an Oregon-type player. Long, athletic, and disruptive on D. Hendrix looks like he can shoot it, and Barefield looked like a senior should look, under control. Missed some threes but we know he can hit those. Looks like we’ll have an athletic team overall, should be a fun year.
I went to NWTRU but got there only in time to see the scrimmage. I missed the 3 point contest and the dunk contest.
My quick thoughts are that the young guys are all pretty athletic. Both Gach probably stood out the most to me. My overall sense of the team this year is that we will likely end up middle of the Pac – 12 race, with a slight chance of making the NCAAs this year.
Listening to Coach K talk about Lahat make me think we could have a upper level team the following 2 seasons and get to the tourney if the key players stick around and stay healthy. To bad he is injured for a good part of this season (out 3 months).
A big key to making the tourney will be having some success against the quality pre-season opponents. The tournament committee is taking a very hard look at that in recent years.
The squad looks athletic and deep. PVD has been hitting the weightroom…loved seeing the new blood. Timmy Allen is a baller and Charles Jones really CAN jump out of the gym.
It would be nice to have some “Oregon type” players since we simply don’t fare well against their athlete type.
Sokay. They soon will face death from the NCAA. That or Oregon Eastern or some such tiny school will. Whatevs.
Until then we won’t have the room above the salary cap that Oregon does.
