NCAA.com: No. 9 Utah stuns No. 8 UCLA

With less than four seconds left, No. 9 Utah and No. 8 UCLA were tied 69-69. Utes’ star Alissa Pili had just enough time.

Despite being covered by two Bruins, Pili drove to the basket and sank an improbable layup in traffic, falling to the floor as the ball rolled through the net. Utah beat UCLA 71-69 in a top-10 conference matchup.

Utah finished things in regulation despite trailing for the majority of the game. Neither team led more than eight points, but UCLA held the lead for more than 30 minutes of the play.

Pili topped all scorers with 23 points along with nine rebounds, four offensive. Isabel Palmer also contributed 14 points and five assists.

The Utes outscored UCLA 17-11 in the fourth to overtake the Bruins who took an eight-point lead midway through the final quarter. Pili scored nine in the fourth including the game-winning bucket.

Utah preserves its second place in the Pac-12 standings at 18-2. The Bruins take their first back-to-back losses this season falling to 17-5, fourth in the conference.

Utah ended the game shooting 38 percent from the field, 26 percent from beyond the arc, and 94 percent from the line, going 18-19. This is the most free throws and highest percentage Utah has made in Pac-12 action this season.

Utah surpassed UCLA on the boards 36-30 and held the Bruins to just eight offensive boards. Utah outscored UCLA in the paint 32-22.

The Utes are 3-1 vs. ranked opponents this season. Utah has defeated multiple ranked opponents in the same season for the first time since 2005-06.

More invested in the ladies this season than the men.  Thinking that without a single senior leaving this season they could make a legitimate run next year.  I mean, they’re good enough this year, but next year could be off the charts.

Pili is amazing.  What led to her departure from USC to Utah?

    • voxnihili

She has said that she was losing her love of playing at USC and decided to try a new environment to see if she could keep enjoying it.

Covey and BJ to Super Bowl

Covey is a winner. He makes every team he joins better. Johnson is also a winner, but Covey’s leadership ability is absolutely off the charts. I knew a couple kids on Timpview High Schools team with Covey and they said the feeling in the locker room was completely different when he was there. That ability to affect locker rooms has stayed with him. I’m sure he has a similar effect on the team in Philly (though obviously to a lesser extent since he isn’t super well known).

I’m so torn because I loath everything Philly. Mostly the fans…but is it worth Covey getting a ring if I have to watch Philly celebrate.

I’ll have to get back to you.

Covey seems to wind up in the right place at the right time.  He appears in the Rose Bowl in 2022, and follows that up with a Super Bowl appearance in 2023.

    GO EAGLES!!!

Does he “wind up” there or does his presense make it happen?

      • chinngiskhaan

That’s exactly what I was going to say. Timpview was pretty good before he got there, but they were UNBEATABLE with him on the team. When he left, they quickly returned to being just good.

You can see from locker room videos that Covey had a big impact on the Utes locker room.

I guess Philly is different for a number of reasons, one of them being that Philly has a ton of talent, and would probably be where they are whether he was there or not.

Philly is 100% set at their #1 and #2 positions at WR.

BUT…they aren’t happy with their #3 and #4. They will look to sign someone/maybe draft a WR late. This means Covey has a good and bad problem. If they bring in another WR, they will try to find someone to take his spot at WR/PR.

Makes sense, kill two birds with one stone.

BUUUUTTTTT…this also means there is a spot open for Covey to get PT at WR. He needs to prove he can get off the line this offseason. That was one area he was terrible at. He couldn’t get off the line vs NFL CB’s and into his routes. We all know he can catch. We all know he can run great routes. He has to get off the line.

If he does so, he has a real shot to stay on the team and actually play. He has every opportunity to excel in front of him. Time for him to go to work (continue working) and take hold of this opportunity.

    I’m excited for him.

Indiana sucked last year, but Simmons had some pretty good stats. Was one of their leading receivers. This is a good pickup. Cam is very good when he has a few reliable targets. Kuithe’s back and now we add another veteran receiver to the group.

  • Pending Moderation

@admin, I understand the cautious approach regarding links. I wonder if you might have an approved list of posters for whom the concern of multiple links in a post does not create a pending moderation status?
Thank you in advance for your consideration.

  • dystopiamembrane

From the down-vote, I accept that there may be too much of a security concern for this recommendation.

    • dystopiamembrane
      2 5

I would then request that there be moderators in place to review such posts and approve those without malicious links.

      • dystopiamembrane

Long-standing, highly active users could be the set of moderators, no?

  • dystopiamembrane
    1 4

Please post your thoughts, fellow board members. I am not sure how to interpret the up- and down-votes on this subject.

    • dystopiamembrane
      1 4

Some further explanation, when creating informative posts, I will often link to outside subject matter. If the post has 3+ links, the post comes in danger of being flagged for moderator approval. I never hear anything about a post if it falls into this approval queue.

      • dystopiamembrane
        1 4

I thought it therefore useful to have either an approved list of posters or an active moderator group to provide feedback and assistance to users.

    • dystopiamembrane

Additionally, moderators could deal with harassment issues on the board.
