      18th on ESPN list.

Returning starters: eight offense, seven defense, zero special teams

Key losses: OT Jackson Barton, G Jordan Agasiva, LB Chase Hansen, LB Cody Barton, FS Corrion Ballard, SS Marquise Blair, K Matt Gay, P Mitch Wishnowsky

Outlook: After winning its first Pac-12 South title, there is a case for Utah to be ranked even higher going into 2019, as some view the Utes as the Pac-12 favorites.

Assuming Zack Moss is healthy, he has a chance to be the best running back in the Pac-12. His 121.3 yards-per-game average ranked second in the conference last season but an injury cost him four games. It will be interesting to see how Moss — and the entire offense, really — looks under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, whom Utes fans will remember from his prior stint as the team’s OC (2005-08). Ludwig has been at Vanderbilt the past four years, following time at Cal, San Diego State and Wisconsin since leaving Salt Lake City.

The Utes didn’t end up with a particularly impressive recruiting class — ESPN ranked it 61st nationally — but it’s not a group the Utes need to get much out of right away because it has a very experienced core returning. Utah is particularly deep on the defensive line but needs to replace three starters on the offensive line.

Another thing going in Utah’s favor: its schedule. The Utes have a manageable nonconference slate (at BYU, Northern Illinois, Idaho State) and miss both Oregon and Stanford during Pac-12 play. — K.B.

Why is Army surprising at 25?

They went 11-2 last year, won the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, took Oklahoma to OT, and crushed Houston 70-14 in their bowl game.

Less surprise and more like damn that is cool. I knew they kicked butt last season. Can it be sustained I guess is my surprise.

Once again Pace, its ESPN(garbage), they live off of their name alone.  They do zero in depth analysis on anything they do anymore.  247 has us at 43, which is a pretty fair ranking.

It is so weird when you have people reply to ignored people.

Yeah as far as this recruiting class goes if Rising is eligible coupled with Sewell and Bowen. Utah did alright and pretty much addressed all necessary gaps.

Funny enough I am concerned with our kicking game. Maybe it won’t be a crutch for Whitt and we will see more Riverboat Kyle come out.

Kicking will be fine. The new kicker was actually in a battle for the starting spot with matt gay to begin the ‘17 season

I remember he lost the position in game though if memory serves. Coleman Peterson still haunts me.

I can’t decide which I’m more tired of: ESPN sticking with the “Utah had a bad class because they only signed x number of players” narrative, or people with an obvious axe to grind who parrot ESPN when it suits their agenda.

In these situations, I go with the who is the bigger fool, the fool or the fool who follows him? In my mind, the following fool is the bigger fool. As such, be more tired of Pace.

Yeah, I’m fine with people that criticize Whitt and the program when they have an actual argument.  Quoting an ESPN sentence or two with no substance is just lazy.  I like a little bit of info with an argument so I have some context to understand their argument with.

I’d like the schedule a lot better if we were missing Washington, or WSU, and playing Stanford instead.

I think Whitt should hire Urban as an offensive consultant, and have him help Ludwig with the offensive game plan for WSU and Washington.  Or at least have a few wrinkles saved specifically for both of those teams that don’t get shown at any other point in the season.

Other than having to replace two key starters on the OL, couldn’t ask for a better situation.   It is VERY important to win the war in the trenches, of course, so what do people feel about the 2019 OL players?

BamBam is the big question mark. If he is able to come in and fill that left tackle spot like Bolles did we just might have a great season.

I love the analysis of returning players, etc. couldn’t care less about the rankings.
