Joe Klatt says one thing. Terry McAulay says the opposite. On X, I’ve seen a lot of diverse opinions, some from just casual fans, and a few that might be more than a fan and whose opinion might mean more – but I forgot to bookmark those. Just a casual observance, the more they get away from the XII, the more they say the penalty should not have…[Read more]

I have no issue with the strategy in general, IF you have all 3 timeouts and can actually leave significant time for yourself after a FG attempt. We only had 2 left. So, there was no way we could stop them from running the clock all the way down unless they made a mistake (going out of bounds, throwing an incompletion). In this scenario, the…[Read more]

You didn’t ignore your Texas roots but that’s okay. It’s tough to take that out of the equation. Someone who grew up on the west coast like me would probably go opposite on most of your evaluations. i.e., Oklahoma State and Oregon State were pretty much equals in historical success until T Boone decided to try to outspend Phil Knight. Yet in…[Read more]

I don’t buy this. You’re telling me some random former NFL referee re-watched the entire game and graded every route just b/c? And he didn’t find a single route where similar contact was made, i.e. the refs were perfect in what is the most difficult part of the game to referee? Has there ever been a game anywhere where referees perfectly…[Read more]

Lasso, My question to you is, how do you know that it was more egregious?
You’re gonna argue til (you’re already blue in the face).
It sucks, it sucks for us, but also it sucks for this rivalry that the game was decided by a referee and not a great play by our defensive front to sack your qb. We’re not going to concede that it was a fair call,…[Read more] -

I agree. With how much time there was on the clock using timeouts was of absolutely no benefit.
On the flip side, BYU was already well within FG range. They weren’t going to pass so it’s not like we could get a sack or a pick. Not much the defense can do at that point. But maybe higher likelihood of them messing up if they had to rush…[Read more]

We just need to realize that this is one where every BYU fan sees it one way and every U fan sees it another. Like Klatt says – a 50/50 call. Sucks to be a U fan.
The reality for me is I put it in the category with a handful of other plays – the if only plays
-If Vaughn somehow keeps his hands off the Y receiver Retslaff still takes the sack. I…[Read more] -

Terry McAulay? He’s a media personality now trying to validate his existence and expand his brand. Did you know that he has an agent and you can book him for a speaking engagement? And we’re really supposed to believe that he looked at every single play of that game? OK, then.

When Whitt declined the 10 second run off and then started taking TOs the message I got was, “We can’t stop them, I don’t believe in our Defense.”
I don’t understand why you give a team needing to drive and with no TOs extra time to make calls, substitute, and have a better plan. IMO it would have been better to tell the D, I know you can do it,…[Read more]

UteBaron89 started the topic Kickoff Strategy in the forum Football 9 months, 1 week ago
Does anyone know if the strategy was to kick short and force a return or if the kicker was supposed to kick to the end zone, but wasn’t capable? Another thing; I’ve always been frustrated with who is put on kick-off team. If you kick into the end zone, go ahead and put your walk-ons, coaches sons, etc. on it. If you actually have to cover a kick,…[Read more]

Ghost of the HEB replied to the topic No FG block? in the forum Football 9 months, 1 week ago
byu-p has pulled off a few fakes this year, so we re-tooled the FG block team to be more block-safe (basically just kept the defense on the field). Problem was there wasn’t a timeout or stoppage of clock prior to the FG attempt, so just didn’t have time to be like “wait, zero chance of fake here, get Lohner in”. Kick had a pretty high arc so…[Read more]

UteBaron89 replied to the topic Defensive Playcall from Sideline in the forum Football 9 months, 1 week ago
See 89-yard TD run vs. Penn St. in Rose Bowl. They scouted it and purposefully reset and looked to the sideline to cause Utah to do the same, then quickly got back to line of scrimmage and snapped it. It was totally by design. Caught the front seven standing looking for call. They must see this as the type of thing were they risk getting caught on…[Read more]

In a discussion about a ref making the wrong call, your argument is to cite another ref…
Stop trying to convince us otherwise, we don’t have to accept it in order to validate your win. It’s starting to feel more like BYU fans are trying to convince themselves it was a good call.

I realize I’m biased, but here’s where I disagree with Klatt. He argued that the call was inconsistent with what the refs had called throughout the game. My question to Klatt, though, is how he knows whether this particular holding call was any more or less egregious than what the refs had seen the entire game.
Terry McAulay, an NFL ref with 19…[Read more]

Good point. If we are going to fair catch it anyway, why not go for max block everytime?

I think everyone here that watched the game pretty much already knew this. The problem is that BYU’s agitprop machine is trying to make it seem as if Utah didn’t have a legitimate complaint.

I prefer never to play BYU ever again. I’m widely traveled and god-damned if this rivalry doesn’t remind me of the Catholic/Protestant divide in Northern Ireland. BYU has its flags and murals and so do we…it’s just too personal and, unlike other rivalries I’ve been part of, you can’t get away from it. I mean, the cul-de-sac I live in is split…[Read more]

Under Bronco it was easy to root for them to have their bus drive into a ditch and miss every game. I hated them, I hated their holier than thou “we’re God’s team doing God’s mission here on this green turf mentality”. Unfortunately many of their fans still have that mentality. I like Coach Sitake, I like Coach Hill, I like Coach A Rod. I have…[Read more]
