Here’s a good resource for some of the things you are interested in rather than me filling up Tony’s server with my blathering. It’s not definitive and it’s 10 years old but there’s still some pretty good stuff in there, especially if you just want to bone up on the basics.

two of the most misused and misunderstood terms in today’s football.
Spread: refers to alignment of eligible receivers. Many think that it refers to an offensive philosophy but it’s really not. It’s best understood when used in conjunction with the word “box” that you will hear a lot on broadcasts. When the offense is lined up, imagine you are…[Read more]

I heard a recent audio clip of Whitt saying the team is switching to a spread offensive system. What were we before? What is the difference?
I know that Jason Beck likes to call run-pass option plays. Are these plays only called in a spread?
Also, when I hear people talk about RPO-heavy offense, they act like it’s a nearly-extinct play style, o…[Read more]

Just look for the following…
1. Brand new “UteHub” account
UteHub had been around for years, as have most of the posters here. We don’t see many “new” posters, so when we do (see #2)…2. Content
If the vast majority of their comments are either “pro-ybu” or “downsliding Utah”, you know they’re a zoob. Also, the Ute fans on here comment…[Read more] -

Is there really a problem of BYU fans posing as Utah fans on this board? I’ve seen some on YouTube comments, but they are always pretty obvious.
How does one levy legitimate concerns about our team, but not become a “zoob in Ute’s clothing?”
I am new here and naive regarding site etiquette.

Why do zoobies always think that after they’ve been so-very-busted over posing as a Ute fan still think they’re fooling anyone? So answer DT’s question. Why DO you fools continue to insist to maintain this transparently insecure masquerade?

AND… enforce tampering! Players are being shopped and pursued while not in the portal. BYU was guilty as hell. Snowden said everyone was doing it to not point the finger at BYU. Tanavausa changed his mind before entering the portal. Both cases were NIL driven.

How often varies by opponent and Utah’s roster composition. When you had two great LB’s like 2016 through 2021, Utah ran nickel probably 75% of the time. The last couple of years, they’ve been going with more 3 LB sets and even been playing around with 3 DE, 1 DL, 3 LB sets. Part of that is to give different looks but it’s also been to cover…[Read more]

Beach your argument about equal playing field makes no sense. Thats like Utah saying if we were in the big 10 we’d be equal to Ohio State. That’s a hypothetical view. I would agree recruiting is harder. Would you rather play for Whitt and Utah or Bronco and BYU ? Utah had a better program reguardless of conference.
Now with the NIL era money tru…[Read more]

I am high on Blake Cotton; he is our second highest-ranked transfer this year. I expect him to take over CB #1, or maybe even Donovan Saunders. Snowden is a solid #2 in my mind, but his size will hurt him. CP was small too, but that kid was cut from a different cloth.

Why are so many Utah fans so insecure they have to claim that anyone who points out potential flaws in specific situations must be a BYU fan?

Isn’t that the whole point of this conversation? That the cycle that built a significant amount of that 11-5 record does not exist anymore?
Whittingham excelled when BYU was stuck in independence and Utah was in the Pac-12. Those dynamics aren’t at play here anymore so what Whitt did in the Pac-12 vs BYU is almost irrelevant.
Especially if…[Read more]

How often does Utah go into the nickel formation? Will Snowden ever be on the field when we’re not in nickel formation?

I don’t know about “rules” as the rules always seem to be written to benefit those that have the most to lose/gain from those rules. Regulatory capture seems to be a fundamental reality. Instead, my take would be a couple of things:
1) Its currently the gold rush. We see it time and again in many different contexts where the rules change, so…[Read more]

NIL = Nzame, Image, and Likeness. Put some guard rails around that who and what qualify for true NIL, pay all others a living stipend, and clean up the transfer portal process to be once a year right after the national championship game. This will clean things up and make it something I can get behind. NIL suffered more scope creep than a…[Read more]

terminolgy: Nickel refers to a 5 DB lineup. Dime is 6 or more DB’s.
With the onset of spread, single RB and multiple WR offenses, teams began countering with nickel defenses as their base turning 4-3 and 3-4 packages into 4-2 and 3-3 even though the talking heads still refer to front 7.
As to Snowden, much like Clark Phillips, he is undersized…[Read more]

NIL is quickly becoming the equivalent of tipping. When the waiter is deciding how much of a surcharge I should be willing to pay on top of the meal I ordered, I lose interest in the product. Because let’s be honest: bringing me a menu, writing down my order and bringing me my food takes the same skillset whether at Denny’s or a Michelin…[Read more]

I need a ball-knower. In my understanding, the nickel back comes in when the formation calls for an extra defensive back to replace a linebacker.
My confusion comes from Smith Snowden being called the nickel. In spring ball, Whitt would say that Scooby Davis had one outside cornerback position locked up, Snowden had the nickel locked up, and they…[Read more]

As a former college athlete my biggest complaint was not being able to make money and play. Pay the players every two weeks a set amount (pay for play). Everyone on the roster gets the same. Simple solution for most players. NIL is where the problem lies. There are very few players that have NIL value. All NIL deals must be approved and have…[Read more]
