Something like this. Probably the best DL in the conference, one of the best LB in the country alongside a couple very solid starters, and a mostly unproven but talented secondary. A lot of transfers who could challenge for spots and depth. This honestly seems like a really good defense to me. Not on the level of years past, but good enough to be one of the best in the conference. Throw in the fact that they’ll likely be supported by an offense that will also be one of the best in the conference, and they could terrorize offenses in the Big12 all year.

    DE Fillinger / Fano
    DT Tafuna / Pepa
    DT Tanuvasa / Vimahi
    DE O’Toole
    LB Barton
    LB Reid
    LB Fotu
    S Ritchie
    S Tao Johnson / Gilman
    NB Snowden / Blocker
    CB Kenan Johnson
    CB Vaughn

From an outsider’s perspective, I can see why someone would think Utah would regress on D this year. Especially a fan of another team whose only experience with Utah’s D in 2023 was their team boat racing them.

3 starters gone to the draft
    Replacing 4 starters at DB
Perceived 2 best LB’s either injured or coming off season ending injury
May only get 1/2 season out of Fano at best (2nd ACL, not sure if same knee)
    DT’s underperformed in 2023

There are ?’s heading in to fall camp which need to be answered in a hurry. That being said, the last time Utah had anything less than an above average defense was the 90’s so I wouldn’t expect anything outside the norm until proven otherwise.

I was on X, and some very excited UA fan tried to tell me that our defense was “dogs**t” last year, and that every single player on Arizona’s roster is better than ours.

I know we get Lander Barton back, and Damuni is hurt, right? We get Fano back, and a couple CB transfers including Calhoun, and that kid from Georgia Tech.

Anybody have a reasonable take on what it’s gonna look like? is it going to be “dogs**t?”

Follow up: I think Utah is between 80 and 83 scholarships using the current roster and expected enrollees/transfers that will happen for fall. Any errors are mine but it’s the best I can do from 30,000 feet.,,

QB (3) – Rising, Rose, Wilson
RB (6) – Bernard, Glover, Woods, Mitchell, Randle, Stanley
WR (10) – Singer, Calderella, Zipperer, Washington, Lyons, McLain, Pittman, Parks, Alford, Za. Williams
TE (7) – Kuithe, Ryan, Jacobsen, Bentley, Suguturaga, King, S. Clegg(?)
OT (7) – Ze. Williams, Olson, Kaumatule, S. Fano, Lomu, Togiai, Garcia
IOL (7) – Mokofisi, Maea, Moea’i, Alderman, Lotulelei, Kump, Harrison
Edge (9) – Akana, L. Fano, O’Toole, Fillinger, Daley, Lae’ea, Fitzgerald, Dillon, Elliss
DT (6) – Tanuvasa, Tafuna, Vimahi, Taufatofua, Fotu, Pepa, T.Fotu
LB (10) – Barton, Damuni, Calvert, Reid, Andrews, Lopes, S. Fotu, Reynolds, Anae(?), Ofahengaue(?)
CB (9) – K. Johnson, Davis, Vaughn, Blocker, Snowden, Calhoun, Hunter, Shemwell, Thompson
    S (7) – T. Johnson, Gilman, Hall, Ritchie, J. Davis, Bryant, Evans
    K (1) – Becker

The 3 that I put ?’s next to I couldn’t find anything definitive and Davis Andrews is supposed to be an immediate mission.

Honestly from a pure talent perspective I think the depth is as good as it’s ever been on the o-line. The concern would be with the overall youth. I could see adding a veteran who might be able to come in and help in case those guys are slow figuring things out but it’s going to be tough to replicate their size, athleticism and quickness.

In the past we brought in tackle “projects” because most of the time the “tackle ready” guys played for the big schools. Guys who in year 3 might put everything together…Think Bam. Massive, athletic but didn’t play a whole lot of football in England.

Fano, Lomu and Garcia, are not that “guy.”

Add the size and experience of some of the older guys and you have the makings of a very good line.

My educated guess based on what intel I’ve gathered –

    LT: Lomu
    LG: Togiai/Mokofisi
    C: Kump/Maea
    RG: Togiai/Mokofisi
    RT: Fano

Anyone with the inside scoop…wondering who will be our starting five across the OL??

From left to right, this is what I think I’ve heard so far: Lomu LT, LG?, Johnny Maea C, RG?, Fano RT.

My opinion Fano tore his in Sept and had surgery in Oct. So if he came back in August, that would be 11 months. So most players would be back by Aug, Sept., at the longest. (Normal ACL).

Lets not Rising Logan Fano… I don’t expect him to play this year. And I agree with Chings 8 sacks is great. Get this kid in our weight room with our coaching staff and kid could be a stud.
